Biography

Martha Barnes was born in 1686; she married Thomas Gilbert IV, as his first wife, about 1703 based on the birth of their first recorded child in that year in Brookfield, Massachusetts. Martha died in Brookfield in the fall of 1746; Thomas remarried a woman with a somewhat similar name to Martha's, the widow Mercy (Gilbert) Barnes, in about 1747. The similarity has contributed to some confusion of the two women in other genealogies.

Notes: A second marriage previously shown in this profile, to Bartholomew Jacobs, is not possible as Martha's first marriage ended with her death in 1746; Bartholomew Jacobs's marriage was recorded in 1766.

The death year of 1746 is plainly shown in the transcript of the Brookfield record; J.H. Temple, in his genealogy of this line, evidently misinterpreted the date as 1740, and the second marriage of Thomas Gilbert IV as occurring in 1741 rather than 1747.
