There is confusion as to whether Samuel was born in Scotland, Ireland, England, or New Jersey. After reading about the history of Great Britian in the 1600's and 1700's, I see why this confusion exists. Queen Elizabeth and later Queens and Kings encouraged the Scots to migrate to Ireland. Many did migrate, looking for a better life. There was also migration to England. There was much turmoil during the next several decades, depending upon which King ruled.

1. Reference Delores Crews' recent "Blackford Genealogy 1640-1997", Will ow Bend Books (1998) p. 1. Hannah is the 11th child, b.c. 1693, died aft er 1712. Samuel (1-Blackford-100)'s first wife was -- Moore. They had t wo children: Matthew and Anthony. Ann Smalley/Munday was the mother of 9 c hildren, including our line (John).

" We know that there were Blackford's living in Scotland, as indicat ed in the original history in this book. Also in the spring of 1997, Da le Blackford and his wife Barbara visited Scotland and went to the villa ge of Blackford, 15 miles north of Sterling. Dale said, 'In the village c emetery of Blackford, we discovered many stones of deceased Blackfords. A mong them was the stone of Minor Blackford, a minister who lived 1738-176 7. It seems more than coincidences that we have in this country Launcel ot Minor Blackford, also a minister, as well as Charles Minor Blackfor d, an author of American Civil War stories. The name Minor is a very unusu al name and has likely been handed down through the family.'

"Descendants of Launcelot Minor Blackford and Charles Minor Blackford curr ently live in Virginia. Their ancestor migrated to America in the 1800' s. We probably have ties to these families back in Scotland in the 1600 's and 1700's. It seems reasonable that our ancestors migrated from Scotla nd to Ireland and England before coming to America."

2. From great-aunt Geraldine's notes:

a. "The first records are from information sent me by Mrs. Earl Berg is of Tell City, Indiana. Mrs. Bergis was a daughter of Sarah Bezarth Blac kford and John Allen Blackford (1834-1850). Mrs. Bergis has verified recor ds back to the children of Samuel and Ann Blackford.

b. "From Mrs. J. Weldon Ashby, 13309, 11th Street, Grandview, Mo., (ca 196 9).

Weldon Blackford, Shelbyville, Missouri has oil portraits of early settle rs named Blackford. Mrs. Ashby believes the given names are Samuel and An n. They were supposedly brought to this country in the 1600's. They were r ecently brought to light after being rolled up and stored in a tru nk of a family member. Weldon is the son of Earl Blackford who died in la te 1967 at Shelbyville, Missouri.

Earl Blackford was a brother of Ella May Blackford Damrell. Mrs. J. Walt on Ashby is a daughter of Ella May Blackford Damrell." (NOTE: I have a co py of a photograph of these portraits- Patrick).

3. Witnessed will of John SMALLEY in Piscataway dated 16 July 1689, prov en 23 June 1697.

4. Was issued patent for lot north of Bound Brook, Middlesex County, lat er Somerset County, New Jersey, in the right of John MOLLESON on 16 Augu st 1695.

5. May have owned land on Staten Island, New York, in 1683. (per Monette ’s ‘First Settlers’).

7. There is substantial debate about the surname of Samuel Blackford 's wi fe, Hannah/Anne.

Some, including Monnette and the Bonham book, have concluded that she is t he daughter of Nicholas Munday/Monday.

Hanna Smalley is said by some to be the wife of Samuel Blackford and the d aughter of John and Ann (Walden/Waldron) Smalley. However, that daughter m arried 23 June 1660/61, John Bangs, son of Edward and Lydia (Hicks) Ban gs (the Bangs family arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts on the Ship ‘Ann e’ 10 July 1623). When John Smalley came to Piscataway his two daughter s, Hannah and Mary, were at this time married and settled in New Englan d. Samuel Blackford and Edward Slater were witnesses for the will of Jo hn Smalley and wife, Ann Smalley of Piscataway wherein daughter "Hannah Ba nges" is listed. Since she is listed as Bangs/Banges in 1689, well after S amuel Blackford and his wife Hannah were having children, it seems unlike ly that she would be the wife of Samuel Blackford.

Additionally, Torrey's shows that John Bangs and Hannah Smalley had "no is sue" and that John Bangs died in 1708.
