DAR Patriot Index Defender of the fort

Fourteen cabins were raised and covered, seven of which were grouped together as a fort, which they named Banta's Fort in Honor of Elder Henderick. With Banta's Fort complete, Samuel Duryea seleted a spot about four miles to the west of Banta's to raise his own cabin on a tributary of Muddy Creek they called "Deban's Run". Sam's cabin was completed i a mere three days. In late March with cabins raised, Sam duryea, Peter Cossart and most of the others returned to White Oak Springs Station to prepare their families to make the move to new Muddy Creek seetlement. The women and children had moved into the cabin on a Friday. They did not have to wait long before their fortune turned sour. This was precisely the oppotuniy the "natives" had been awaiting. The attack came on Monday, before the return of the reast from White Oak Springs. Having remained closed up in the cabin for three days, their corn meal was exhausted. While the two men were outside the cabin, buisly intent on cuting a stone mortar wit which to grind more corn, they were ambushed by native war party. The stealth of the atttack proved disastrous. John and Peter dropped their tools and fled for the safety of the cabins. Bullock, in his haste, stumbled and fell and paid for it with his life. Duryea, though mortally wounded by a rifle ball in his chest, managed to make it to the cabin and throw himself prostate across the bed. Peter's sister, Wyntje Bullock's bride lingered for a moment in the doorway. She gazed upon the scene trying to ascertain whether her husband was alive or dead. Her hesitation was her mistake and she followed him into eternity after a well placed rifle shot pierced her heart and she fell instantly dead. (Now see Peter's wife)
