BURIAL Burial Details Unknown; MEMORIAL ID 192217034
SAMUEL HANCOCK WAS BORN IN 1701 IN Henrico County, Virginia, the son of Samuel Hancock and Johan Hancock.
In 1726 in Chesterfield County, Virginia he married ELIZABETH JAMESON the daughter of John Jameson and Elizabeth Mosely.
Samuel and Elizabeth had four children: John, Samuel, William and Sarah.
Samuel and Elizabeth were given 200 acres of land by his parents in 1733 and sold the property a short time later.
In 1740 Samuel sold the land on which he was living on the West River in Amelia County. The family moved to Prince Edward County and lived on property owned by John Woodson. That property was purchased by Samuel Jr. in 1751 when Samuel Jr. was 21 years of age. However, in 1754 he was forced to sell the property to Abraham Venable to help pay off some of his father’s debts.
In 1755 Samuel Sr. was living in Lunenburg County. Evidently Samuel Sr.’s financial difficulties continued since Samuel Jr. purchased for 50 pounds all of his father’s personal property, consisting of furniture and livestock. Samuel Sr.’s father left him one gun, one large sermon book and his wearing apparel in his will in 1760. His brothers and sisters inherited the family’s land and slaves.
Samuel and Elizabeth lived in Dale Parish in what is now Chesterfield County.
Samuel was referenced in his son John H. Hancock’s will in 1763. At that time Samuel was living on land that John had acquired on the Tar River in what was then Granville County, North Carolina. In his will John granted one-half of his land to his brother Samuel but specified that his father be allowed to continue to live on that land until his death. John died before he was able to move from Cumberland County, Virginia to the land he had acquired in North Carolina..
He reportedly died in 1774 in Franklin County, North Carolina. *Contradicts date listed above.
