Brief Life History of Samuel
Biography
Samuel Hodgkins first appears in Gloucester with his wife Hannah in 1684. A William Hodgkins was an early inhabitant of Ipswich, and had a son Samuel born there in 1658. Samuel Hodgkins was appointed, in 1694, to keep the ferry at Trynall Cove, where he had already built a house. He was a shoemaker; and a descendant of the same trade was living, near the close of the last century, where his ancestor settled, and was the last ferryman at the place.
Samuel Hodgkins's wife died July 28, 1724, aged sixty years; and he next married Mary Stockbridge, May 3, 1725. The date of his death is not known.

More Information
Samuel Hodgkins (William2, William1) was a shoemaker and cordwainer. Samuel moved to Gloucester, Mass., in 1684. In 1694, he was appointed to keep the ferry at Tyndall Cove, where he already had built a house. A discrepancy exists between the two major genealogical sources used on the name of his first wife. Ruby Hodgkins Callender in her more recent Hodgkins Genealogy:
Chiefly the Descendants of David and Mary Spiller Hodgkins of Ipswich, Massachusetts, updated in 1980, has Samuel marrying Anna Gee, a daughter of John and Hazel (Willix) Gee of Exeter, N.H. The earlier Genealogy of the Hotchkins Family (1927) by Eben B. Hotchkins lists Samuel's first wife as Hannah Pilkington.
Callender, however, lists a Hannah Pelkington as the first wife of Samuel's son, Samuel Hodgkins Jr., which likely seems more accurate. Regardless of her name, Samuel Hodgkins Sr. and his wife had 15 children, all in Gloucester records, according to Eben B. Hotchkins. Samuel then married a Mary Stockbridge May 3, 1725. Babson in his history of Gloucester says that Samuel's sons Philip and Jedidiah went down the coast to Falmouth, Maine, according to Eben B. Hotchkins.
Several of Samuel's children married spouses that helped weave different family lines that led to Mary Hodgkins Banfield. Samuel and Anna Gee Hodgkins' daughter Hannah Hodgkins wed James Kent, and their daughter married John Murch, whose ancestors included Theo Murch, a grandmother of Mary Hodgkins Banfield. Samuel and Anna Gee Hodgkins' son Phillip Hodgkins was Mary Hodgkins Banfield's seventh great-grandfather. In addition, Samuel and Anna Gee Hodgkins' daughter Mercy Hodgkins was the great-grandmother of Lois R. Coombs who wed Lewis C. Murch in another branch of the Murch family tree.
