Birth

Samuel Howland Jr. was born circa 1671 in Freetown, Bristol County, Massachusetts. Marriage

Samuel Howland married either Sarah without a maiden name,[1] or Mary Merihew of Dartmouth[2] on September 23, 1708, in Freetown, Massachusetts[3] or on July 27, 1708 in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.[4] However, it presents the problem with his wife's identity based on an older source. It is discussed here below at the “Identity of Wife” section. Residence

They lived at Pembroke, Massachusetts.[1][2] Life

He was a prominent citizen of Freetown, where he resided during his whole life.[2] Occupation

He was surveyor of highways in 1701, 1702, and 1704; constable in 1707; register of deeds for Bristol County in 1721 and 1745; justice of the peace for Bristol County from 1730 to 1744.[2] Issues

In 1883, William Thomas Davis' book, Ancient Landmarks of Plymouth, in part II on page 155 placed all six children in the family of Samuel Howland and his wife Sarah without a maiden name. The issues were as follow: Zebulon Howland, m. Lydia Cushing.[2] Caleb Howland, m. Deborah Oldham on January 25, 1738/39.[2] Ruth Howland.[2] Samuel Howland married Sarah Joy[1] on October 13, 1738.[2] However, this is in conflict with another source that Samuel Howland who married Sarah Joy was the son of Abraham Howland. Ichabod Howland.[2] Abigail Howland, m. Robert Holmes.[2] Also, in 1885, in his book on page 84, Franklyn Howland cited William Thomas Davis' work and placed the children in the family of Samuel Howland and Mary Merihew. However, in 1899, William Thomas Davis made a correction to suggest that Sarah Joy was the mother of six children in the appendix in his book on page 336.[5] It suggests that these children never belong to Samuel Howland and Mary Merihew or Sarah without a maiden name. They are the children of other Samuel Howland and his wife, Sarah Joy. Whether Samuel Howland and his wife Sarah without a maiden name or Mary Merihew ever had any children is unknown. Identity of Wife

Franklyn Howland published his book in 1885, and he wrote that Samuel Howland married Mary Merrihew.[2] However, it was in conflict with an older source in the book of William T. Davis, Ancient Landmarks of Plymouth. Part I. Historical Sketch & Titles of Estates, Part II; Genealogical Register of Plymouth Families, published in 1883 on page 155, and it said, “SAMUEL, Pembroke, son of above, by wife Sarah, had Zebulon, m. Lydia Cushing; Caleb, m. Deborah Oldham; Ruth; Samuel, m. Sarah Joy; Ichabod, and Abigail.”[1] The identity of his wife whose name was only given Sarah without a maiden name, so Samuel Howland married to either Mary Merihew or Sarah without a maiden name.
