Biography

This profile is part of the Howland Name Study.
The Mayflower Charts for Howland says that Joshua Howland was born to Samuel Howland and Mary Sampson on 12 May 1683 in Bristol, Massachusetts Bay Colony;[1] however, Franklyn Howland's work reports that Joshua was born in Freetown, Bristol County, Province of Massachusetts Bay.

He married first, Elizabeth Holloway, of Taunton, on 12 May 1709 in Freetown, Bristol County, Province of Massachusetts Bay. His wife died sometime before 1725.

In Freetown, Joshua Howland entered his purpose of marriage to Dorothy Lee on 17 February 1724/25,[2] so this event was the announcement of their intentions of marriage. He married her as his second wife sometime after 17 February 1725, probably in Freetown.

Joshua lived for a time in Taunton, but we find him again a resident of Freetown, as will be seen by his father's will.

Children by the first wife, Elizabeth Holloway, not in order of birth as follows:[3]

John Howland, b. 26 June 1710; d. 1790.
Malachi Howland, b. 7 December 1711; d. 12 July 1802.
Job Howland, m. Jeminia Booth, of Middleborough. They had two children.
Elizabeth Howland.
Gershom Howland.
Joshua Howland.
Children by the second wife, Dorothy Lee as follows:[3]

Samuel Howland, b. 6 February 1726/27, Freetown, Bristol County, Massachusetts.[4]
Isaac Howland, b. 4 March 1727/28, Freetown, Bristol County, Massachusetts.[4]
Philip Howland, b. 15 November 1730, Freetown, Bristol County, or Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.
Phebe Howland, b. 15 November 1731, Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.[5][6]
George Howland, b. 18 June 1733, Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.[7][8]
Gershom Howland, b. 3 March 1733/34, Freetown, Bristol County, or Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.
Phebe Howland, b. 18 October 1736, Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.[9]
Lydia Howland, b. 18 March 1738/39, Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.[10]
Betsey "Betty" Howland, b. b. 3 September 1741, Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts;[11] m. Levi Rounseville. The footnote in Franklyn Howland's work says, "Levi Rounseville was of Freetown, and a grandson of Philip Rounseville, who m. Mary Howland, dau. of Samuel (89.) He was captain of a company of minute men at Lexington in 1775. He was b. 1739; d. 8 January 1815; m. second, Polly Brown.
