Birth

Samuel Howland was born about 1638 to Henry Howland and his wife Mary in Duxbury, Plymouth Colony.[1] He was "near 70 years old" on 8 July 1707 [NGSQ 75:112, citing Bristol County Court of General Sessions 1702-1714:121].
An original document, dated 8 July 1707, was a writ to the men of Freetown, Massachusetts regarding their choice of constable, Samuel Howland, Sr., who was unable to serve due to his age of 70, the town must pick someone else. It was signed by John Cary on the front on 17 July 1707 and was signed on the back by John Hathaway, John Simmons, and Benjamin Chase as selectmen on 12 August 1707.[2] His age of 70 in 1707 showed that he was born in 1638.
Marriage

Some sources provide various identities for Samuel Howland's wife.
In 1883, in the book Genealogical Register of Plymouth Families in the first edition, on page 155, William Thomas Davis wrote, “SAMUEL, Freetown, son of 1st Henry, by wife Mary.”[3]
Again, in 1899, in the book Ancient Landmarks of Plymouth. Part II. Genealogical Register of Plymouth Families in the second edition on page 154, William Thomas Davis wrote, “SAMUEL, Freetown, son of 1st Henry, by wife Mary.”[4] However, he made the correction for Samuel Howland's wife in the appendix on page 336 and wrote, “SAMUEL, 1st in the text, m., 1678, Mary Merihew.”[5]
In 1885, in the book A Brief Genealogical and Biographical History of Arthur, Henry, and John Howland, on page 74, Franklyn Howland wrote, “His wife was named Mary, which is all the records reveal of her.” Also, on page 75, he wrote that Samuel Howland's will was to give “wife Mary, 2 cows, white mare and ye colt, one warming pan, one basin and my chamber pot, and bed I commonly lie upon and the bedding belonging to it; also one sheet and a box and all therein at the time of my decease.”[6]
In 1939, Clarence Almon Torrey published his article “A Nash-Sampson-Delano-Howland Problem,” in The American Genealogist; Vol 15 (Jan 1939) on pages 165 thru 167, and he wrote, "Presumably,... and Mary Sampson, who married Samuel Howland, was born between 1646 and 1655."
In 1985, New England Marriages Prior to 1700 was written by Clarence Almon Torrey, and it was reprinted in 1992, he wrote, “HOWLAND, Samuel (-1716) & Mary [Sampson], dau Abraham, gr-dau Samuel Nash; b 1675; Freetown.[7]
The location of their marriage probably occurred in Duxbury, Plymouth Colony. Duxbury was their hometown where Samuel Howland and Mary Sampson grew up with their parents until Samuel Howland's father, Henry Howland, died in Duxbury on 17 January 1671. Eventually, Samuel and Mary Howland resided in Freetown, Plymouth Colony, where they raised their children there sometime in the 1680s.

A verdict was given by the jury, "not guilty of willful murder, yet we find that the said Howse received his deadly wound by Samuel Howland's gun going off, as it lay on his shoulder."
Samuel Howland received property from his father, Henry Howland's 6th lot in Freetown, when it was divided by his nephew, Nathaniel Howland, on 13 February 1687.

Henry Howland died in 1670, and Mary his wife died June 16, 1674. Zoeth had a son Nathaniel, who divided his grandfather's lot (the 6th on Freetown) with uncle Samuel, Feb. 13, 1687. From "Early Records of Bristol County": 3

Samuel Howland, of Freetown, Yeoman, made Feb 15, 1715, a will referring to his wife Mary, his daughter Mary Rounsevill, his daugter Content Hanford, his sons Samuel, John, Abraham, Joshua, and Gershom, and grand daughter Mary Morton, and each of Isaac's children. The will was probated May 1716.

bef 1673 Samuel married Mary Sampson, daughter of Abraham Sampson.

"1687 August 8th - Letters of Administration were granted to Samuel Howland, upon the estate of his brother John Howland, deceased. [Samuel, John and Zoeth, were the sons of Henry Howland, of Duxbury, said Henry being one of the 26 origional proprietors of Freetown. Henry Howland died in 1670, and Mary his wife died June 16, 1674. Zoeth had a son Nathaniel, who divided his grandfather's lot (the 6th on Freetown) with uncle Samuel, Feb. 13, 1687. In this division Samuel Howland also received 32 acres of land in Swansea. Nathaniel Howland, of Dartmouth, in consideratio of 60 pounds, sold Henry Brightman, of Portsmouth, R.I. half a freeman's share in Freetown, and half a freeman's share in the meadows at Sippacan, Dec. 8, 1691. Zoeth was the ancestor of the New Bedford branch of the Howland family.]" 15

Samuel Howland of Freetown, Yoeman, made his will gave "to wife Mary, 2 cows, white mare and ye colt, one warming pan, one basin and my chamber pot, and bed I commonly lie upon and the bedding belonging to it; also one sheet and a box and all therein at the time of my decease." "To daughter Mary Rounsevill one cow. To daughter Content Sandford more than she has had one pound. To my sons Samual, John, Abraham, Joshua, and Gershom more than they had in other things one shilling each. To Mary Morton one shilling, and to each of son Isaac's children on pound in money" 15

Will was presented and proved in the court of Probate May 7, 1716. 15

Besides the above enumerated gifts, Samuel Howland had conveyed to his sons by deed as follows. "1711 April 13th, To son Joshua of Taunton, one quarter of the sixth lot, one quarter part in width and upon the north side." "1712 Dec. 16th, to son Joshua who is now said to be of Freetown, one quarter part in bredth of the sixth lot from Taunton River to the great ffresh pond." "1722 Dec. 16th, to sons Samual and Gershom of Freetown, a part of the northerly half of the sixth lot." 15

Samuel Howland, the parent, was elected one of the Selectmen of Freetown May 12, 1690 and Assessor Nov. 24, 1697. He is undoubtedly the Samuel Howland who resides in Duxbury in 1662, and was fined 10 shillings or to be whipt for carrying on the Lord's day a grist from the mill; and he was also charged with "discharging a fowling piece on the body of William Howse" of Sandwich, while gunning at the "high pyne on Salthouse beach". A verdict was given by the jury, "not guilty of willful murder, yet we find that the said Howse received his deadly wound by Samuel Howland's gun going off, as it lay on his shoulder." Mary the daughter of Samuel Howland, is supposed to be the wife of Phillip Rounsevill and the mother of the entire Rounsevill family in this country. 15

Text: The date of the marriage of Abigail to John Young is in dispute. According to Howland's History, this Abigail married Young on 2 9m [November] 1678, a date not found in any records relating to Abigail and one too late to accord with her being called Abigail Young in her mother's will of 1674. Howland's alleged date is the one found in the Friends Records for the marriage of an Abigail Howland to Richard Keerby (see Abigail, widow of No.2, Zoeth Howland). The names of some of the children born to John Young and wife Abigail (e.g., Joseph, Henry, and possibly Robert) are Howland names and re compatible with a presumption that the mother was a daughter of Henry Howland; but if she were, Abigail was married many years earlier. A likely record of the marriage is the previously cited one in 1684. Extensive information is available on the family, both published and unpublished. A quick review of the Youngs in Plymouth Colony, made by the the authors Wakefield and Sherman, suggests that this John is the only Young in the colony likely to be Abigail's husband. CONT Note: This is a decently sourced out report with lots of potential for further study.
