About Samuel Pounds

"Another old citizen gone - We regret the duty of announcing the death of Samuel Pounds, father of Captain Henry Frasher Pounds of Paint Township, which occurred on the 11th of September. Deceased had reached the advanced age of 80 years. Originally from Mercer county, PA, he settled in this (Holmes) county in 1836, and has ever since resided in this and our neighboring county of Delaware. As a man he was highly esteemed, and as a Democrat he was of the good old-fashioned kind, having three times voted for General Jackson for President, and voted the Democratic ticket all his life.

- Holmes County Farmer, Holmes County, Ohio. Oct 2, 1873.

Samuel Pounds is given as the father of Mathias Pounds on his death certificate. Both Mercer county, and Beaver county were formed in 1800 from the counties of Allegheny, and Washington for Beaver, and Allegheny and Crawford for Mercer. If Samuel and Isaac Jr. were born in 1790s in the same area of PA as the family lived in after 1800, they would have either been born in Allegheny, Washington or Crawford counties.

The first record of Samuel is from the 1820 Slippery Rock Township, Mercer county, PA census. Other Pounds living in Mercer at that time were Isaac jr & sr, John, and Thomas. In the home there was one male under 10 (Henry Frasher Pounds) one male born 1794 - 1804 (Samuel) and one female born 1794 - 1804 (Elizabeth)

1830 Pamatuning Township, Mercer county, PA census. The Obituary of Mathias Pounds related he was born in Mercer county, PA, in 1826, and lived there until he was 7 years old. The biography of son Richard M. Pounds says the family left PA in 1838. Another Pounds researcher says that Samuel left PA and came to OH in 1833. Either date would be consistent with census records but the 1833 date would be consistent with the information from the obitaury of Mathias. I believe that this is the same Samuel Pounds that is later living in Holmes and Delaware counties in OH. Only Samuel and John are left in Mercer county; John is still living in Slippery Rock Township, Isaac Sr and Thomas are no longer there. Probably Isaac Sr. has died, Thomas may have died or moved West. The biography of Richard M. Pounds states he was born in Beaver county, PA but there was no Samuel Pounds in Beaver county in either 1820, 1830. Samuel did seem to have itchy feet and it is possible that after brother Isaac moved to Ohio, he may have moved from Slipper Rock Township, PA to Mercer City where Mathias was born, and then to Pamatuning Township. Another possibility is that Samuel's wife went home to be with her mother in Beaver county when Richard was born.
