Biography ==Samuel Prentice, Jr. was born on 25 Nov 1702 in Newton, Massachusetts <ref name="settlers"> 1876 "IL - History of the Early Settlers of Sangamon County, Illinois" p844 by John Carroll Power & Edwin A. Wilson & Co. of Illinois. </ref> <ref> Descendants of Thomas Prentice </ref> & was the son of Esther & Samuel Prentice, Sr.

He was married on 22 Sep 1725 in Stonington, Connecticut by Rev. Ebenezer Rosseter to Abigail Billings b=1707 (daughter of Lt. Ebenezer Billings & Phebe Denison) d=30 Oct 1789. <ref name="settlers"/> He and his family lived on a large tract of land in the northwest corner of the town that included "Prentice Mountain" and "Prentice Brook".Much of the land was returned to the Pequot Nation in the late 1900s. Samuel was the town clerk of Stonington, Connecticut for at least 30 years, based on records in his own handwriting still available at the Stonington Clerk's office. (North Stonington is now a separate town. Itwas split off from Stonington over 30 years after his death). He was also a Deacon in the N. Stonington Congregational Church, verified in the church records. <ref name="settlers"/>

He was deputy to the general court in 1749, 1750, 1753, 1757. In 1751 the general court was appointed him a Justice of the Peace forNew London County, and annually thereafter he was reappointed until his death. Samuel Prentice died on 11 Oct 1773 in North Stonington, New London County, Connecticut at age 69 & was buried at Prentice Cemetery in NorthStonington, New London County, Connecticut. <ref> 1932 "Headstone Inscriptions of the Town of North Stonington, New London County, CT" for Prentice Cemetery, compiled by Charles R.
