About Capt. Samuel Ransom

A Patriot of the American Revolution for CONNECTICUT with the rank of CAPTAIN. DAR Ancestor # A094561

Captain in the Revolutionary War. Slain in the Battle of Wyoming, which was in Wyoming Valley, Westmoreland County, Connecticut at the time of his death. Captain Samuel Ransom and his company joined General Washington shortly after December 12, 1776 and fought with him in the battle at Millstone; they were also at Bound Brook, at Brandywine, at Germantown, and at Mud Fort. In October, 1777, Captain Ransom's company mustered still sixty-two men. They continued with the continental army until the threatened invasion of Wyoming by the British and Indians in 1778, when Captain Ransom, with others, hastened to the defense of their families and homes. Some of them arrived in time to participate in the bloody fight of July 3, 1778; and many of them , among whom was Captain Ransom, lost their lives in the battle.

Samuel was the son of Robert and Sarah (Chyles/Childs) Ransom. He married Esther Lawrence May 6, 1756 in Canaan, Litchfield, Connecticut. Children: Sarah, Samuel, George Palmer, Sybil, Esther, Lovisa, William, Mary and Lois.

His wife Esther married Captain James Bidlock after his death.
