The grave of Samuel Shepard at Plainfield, Conn., is marked by a simple slab with the inscription S.S., 1724. His wife Eleanor survived him, but the date of her decease is not known. He was the son of Isaac Shepard, of Concord (Nashoba), Mass., who was killed by the Nashua Indian. Feb. 12, 1678, and grandson of Dea. Ralph Shepard, of Dedham, Maiden and Concord (1603-1691), and his wife, Thank Lord, from Stepney Parish (London, England). For further particulars see the monograph written upon the "Puritan Ralph Shepard" by his descendant and namesake, the late Ralph Hamilton Shepard, of New Haven, N.Y. or consult Judge H. M. Historical Synopsis

The third town organized within Windham County, was Plainfield, in the Quinebaug Country, east of Windham. Neither James Fitch nor the Winthrops attempted settlement of this land earlier, but Oct 13, 1690, Fitz, John and Wait Winthrop petitioned the general court and the plantation was begun. A number of Massachusetts families took possession of Quinebaug and east of the river soon after 1690, when they purchased it from Winthrop."

Familiar names included in the list of these residents include Edward, Joseph, & Benjamin Spalding, from Chelmsford; Isaac & Samuel Shepard wtih their stepfather Nathaniel Jewell, from Concord. The most northerly residents included the young Shepard brother of Malden, sons of Ralph Shepard, deceased. The Spaldings were a mile or two south of the Shepards, but the great number of residents were south of the present village of Plainfield. "At the time of this removal to Quinebaug, Major James Fitch was a little past middle age & for years had been one of the most prominent men in Connecticut settlements....other settlers soon followed Major Fitch, including Samuel & Josiah Cleveland from Woburn. Elisha Paine bought two thousand acres in the south of the tract from Major Fitch. Josiah Cleveland bought land at Wanangatuck of Richard Bushnell." [2]
