In the Revolutionary war, A private that served in the Company of Capt. Manasseh Kempton, Col. Freeman regiment enlisted September 27, 1777 and discharged October 29, 1777. Also Capt Henry Jennes' company, Col. John Hathaways 2nd Bristol company regiment. Entered into Service August 2, 1780 and discharged August 8, 1780. And was Sergeant of Capt. Samuel Tubbs' Company, Col. Timothy Walker.
Until about 1790, Mr. Spooner was a mariner, being for several years in command of his own ship. The exposure of his calling finally so impaired his health that he was forced to relinquish it. He then resorted to school-teaching, which was afterwards his main calling. He taught mostly in Bristol County, Massachusetts, until the close of the last century, when he removed to Brookfield, where he purchased a tract of land , and here, for a number of years he taught winter schools.
Samuel was a man of much more than ordinary ability; a good citizen, meeting all his obligations to society. Devoted to his family, he gave his children a good common-school education.
