SAMUEL VIGO McKEE

tells his own story so well that nothing need be added. To him, as he says, the lot has fallen where the work is hard and this world's pay small. From all sources we hear of him as a laborious, self-sacrificing home missionary. He says:

" Ancestry, Scotch Irish on father's side, German on mother's side. Nativity, Knox county, Ohio [sic Indiana]. Schooling in common schools. Entered Hanover College, Ind., in 1852, as Senior Prep., and Jefferson College in 1856 as Senior. Have no vivid memory of any special ups or downs in college life only that I had to study hard during the whole course and always stood well up in my class. In the literary society I remember that I took but little interest, was never a success as a writer, debater or declaimer, and I presume that is one reason why I have not attained to more prominence as a writer and preacher. I always enjoyed listening to the boys far more than to engage in these exercises myself. I was a member of the Philo Society in college and loved that society greatly.

" I chose the ministry, and studied theology at Allegheny. I had the ministry in view from my childhood, because I felt that I could best honor my Siviour in this service. However, when I graduated from college, I attempted to turn aside from my original purpose, and tried to get a start in the medical profession, but all the while the words "Woe is me if I preach not the gospel" kept sounding in my ears.

During this unsettled state of my mind I courted and married Miss Susannah C. Vanatta, the daughter of a lawyer then residing in Atchison County, Missouri. We have been living happily together for nearly twenty-four years.

We have had eight children born to us six daughters and two sons. Our eldest, born while I was a student at Allegheny, is now twenty-one years old and our youngest is five years old. Our children are all vigorous and healthy, and all with us; except the two who have gone to glory and are "waiting and watching " for us on the other shore.

My wife was with me during two years of my seminary life ; the third year she stayed with my father in Indiana. She has been a true helpmeet to me and a prominent worker at home and in the inteiests of missions. Since I have been in the ministry it has fallen to my lot to labor in hard fields either in churches divided into factions or in purely missionary fields. Have always had to get along on a mere pittance of a salary, and it has required the very closest economy to make ends meet and keep out of debt
I am now in a mission field in this northern Mich., at a salary of about $750, and out of this pay $125 house rent. But notwithstanding my many trials and hardships I am glad that God has directed my steps into this blessed work of the ministry. In summiug up the trials and tribulations, and the joys and happiness attendant upon this service, I can truly say that God has ever been good to me and mine, and that our joys and happiness will more than counterbalance the trials and tribulations through which we have passed."
In his letter from Binghampton, Mich., of Feb. '85, he says : "I left Port Austin, September 1st, '84; having received and accepted an invitation to supply the church at this place. I am working away here quietly and hopefully."

The world has urgent need of a great many just such men as McKee, "men whom the world cannot buy" who are willing to "endure hardness as good soldiers," with but little pecuniary compensation. His classmates honor his pluck and perseverance.

He is 5 ft. 9, and brings down the beam at 240.

=============================

Rev. Samuel McKee, pastor of the Christian Church, Mishawaka, was born in Knox county, Ind., and brought up on a farm. In his childhood days he seemed impressed with the duty of entering the ministry when he should become a man. This impression seemed never to leave him for a moment, for he early began to prepare himself for the work. He attended Hanover College in this State for some time, and graduated at Jefferson College, at Cannonsburg, Pa. He also graduated at the Western Theological Seminary, at Allegheny, Pa., in 1861, and entered the ministry the same year, in the Indiana Church in Knox county, which was the first Presbyterian Church organized in the State. He remained there two years. He was a delegate from Indiana for the U. S. Christian Commission, and was with the army for seven weeks. In 1863 he visited the convalescent camp at Nashville, Tenn., and the hospital at Chattanooga. He has a cane made from the wood of the first Presbyterian church that was built in America (1808). After acting as pastor for the Churches at Kendallville, Waynesville, Ill., Gilman, Ill. and Buckley, Ill., he came to this charge in 1878. He was married June 28, 1858, to Miss Husannah C. Vanatta, by whom he has had 8 children, 6 living, viz.: Mattie M., Carrie B., William N., Julian, John A. and Flora B. The deceased's names were Ella G. and Jennie R.
