Sarah Carlton was the maternal grandmother of the Dean line when she married Dr. Burkett Dean in Goergia and it is possible that she is a direct descendant of Henry Sampson, the seventeen year old boy who came to America on the Mayflower. Dated 4/18/1797. a sketch of her family record is as follows . . . "Thomas Carlton, Sr. born in King and Queen County, Virginia, 10/30/1721, died 11/12/1786 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia (once Lunenburg), married 3/31/1744 in Virginia, died 1/8/1795 in Wilkes County, Georgia.

Sarah Swepson was born on 15 March 1726 on her parents' plantation in Gloucester County, English colony of Virginia.
She was the daughter of Thomas Swepson Jr.,1685–1730, and his 2nd wife, Dorothy Virginia (Henry) Swepson, 1684–1757.
Her paternal immigrant ancestor was William Swepstone, ca. 1640-1680, born in Earlstone Manor, Burghclere, Hampshire, England, and emigrated to Gloucester Co., Virginia, as a young man.
His son was Thomas Swepston Sr. (1665-1714), married Ann Riddick (1665-1720). Thomas Jr. was his son.
Sarah was William's great-granddaughter.
Sarah Swepson (aka Swepston) married Thomas Carleton III (1721-1786) on 31 March 1744 in Gloucester County, Commonwealth (Colony) of Virginia.
They had 13 children, all born in Virginia between 1745-1767. The couple lived in King & Queen County until about 1750, then they moved first to Charles City County, then on to Lunenburg County for a short time before settling on a plantation farm in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, where their two youngest children were born.

Thomas Carleton III passed away on 12 November 1786 on his plantation farm in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, USA. He was 65 years old. His will was proven in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, on 9 July 1787. It named his 3 living sons: Thomas, Henry & Gabriel Carleton, as Executors.
His wife survived his passing. When her son, Thomas Swepson Carleton (1752-1818), moved his family from Mecklenburg County, Virginia, to Georgia in 1792, she moved with them.
She passed away on their plantation farm near Beaverdam Creek, Greene County, Georgia, on 26 January 1795.
