Sarah Coody was a Cherokee woman

Biography

Sarah Coody was born about 1780 in the Cherokee Nation (East). She may have been the daughter of Joseph Coody, a white man, and his Cherokee wife. She partnered George Fields, also Cherokee, about 1805 when he was still married to Jennie Brown (George and Jennie separated in 1810). [1] George and Sarah were the parents of Richard, Rider, Ruth, Nannie, Dempsey, Martha, and John. [2] The family is listed on the 1835 Cherokee Census living on the Little River (now Alabama). [3] They emigrated to Indian Territory about 1837. George died there about 1849. Sarah appears on the 1851 Drennan Roll living in the Saline District, Cherokee Nation, with granddaughter Sarah Mosley. [4] She filed a claim as "Widow of Cap Geo Fields" related to his service in the War of 1812. [5] She died in 1857 and is buried at the Ross Family Cemetery, Mayes County, Oklahoma. [6]
