Biography

From < “Dabney: Early Virginia Info >

Sarah Winston was born to Isaac and Sarah (Dabney) Winston about 1710 in Hanover County, Virginia.

She married Col. John Syme of Hanover in 1728 at the age of 18. Her husband was a widower and probably considerably older. He died about 3 years later, leaving her with one son. John Syme, Jr, born 1728/29.

She remarried in 1734 to her first husband’s overseer, John Henry, a well-educated young man. He was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and educated at King’s College, Aberdeen, before emigrating to Virginia. They had at least nine children who survived to adulthood: William, who had one child; Patrick, born 29 May, 1736, who married first Sarah Shelton and had six children and second Dorothea Dandridge and had eleven children; Jane, who married Samuel Garland Meredith and had four children; Susanna, who married Thomas Madison and had three children; Sarah, who married Thomas Thomas of Bristol, England, whose children are unknown; Mary, who married Luke Boyer/Bowyer and had no children; Ann, who married William Christian and had six children; Elizabeth, born circa 1749, who married first William Campbell and had two children and second William Russell and had one child; Lucy, born 1750, who married Valentine Wood and had six children.

After Sarah’s remarriage, she and John Henry continued to live on the Syme farm, Studley, in Hanover County. John was a promiinent figure in the county, colonel of the militia, county surveyor, sheriff, Justice of the Peace, and vestry man in St. Paul’s Parish. The income from the Syme estate was limited because of its geograpy and poorly chosen overseers. He attempted to supplement his income by conducting a boarding school in his home. He made a map of Virginia that was published in London in 1770 by Thomas Jefferys, a prominent engraver. However, the map was not a commercial success. After his stepson, John Syme Jr., reached majority in 1749, he moved his family to Mount Brilliant farm, which he purchased by selliing a number of patents in western Virginia that he had a acquired early in his marriage. Despite his limited financial success, he was able to give his two sons pieces of land before his death.

Sarah and John continued to live on the Mt. Brilliant farm until John’s death February 3, 1773. Because Sarah felt unable to manage the farm by herself, she moved to the home of her daughter, Jane (Henry) Meredith and her husband, Col. Samuel Meredith, in Hanover County. In 1779, Meredith purchased the Winton farm in Amherst County and Sarah moved there with the Merediths. She died at Winton in 1784. [6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12]
