Sara Cochet appears to have arrived from Walcheren/ Oost Soutberg in Zeeland on the Oosterland on 25 April 1688 as the widow of Pieter/Pierre le Clercq (with whom Coertzen says she had a son, Abraham le Clercq - who comes with her). Less than a month later - on the 16 May 1688 - she marries Guillaume du Toit? They had three daughters. http://www.mypeoplepuzzle.co.za/cornel_viljoen_research/3918.htm

Sara Cochet went to South Africa as a widow with Guillaume du Toit according to SAG volume 4 page 306

[Guillaume, however, arrives before her in 1686, on the ship Vrijheijt, and comes from Lille (in Flandres) so the 'together with' option seems unlikely - Sharon]

Coertzen tells us that also arriving on the Oosterland in 1688 from Zeeland with her are:

  • 1) her son, Abraham le Clercq (who marries Magdalene Motoun 20 years later), but who is settled in Vogel Vallei (Voel Vallei) near Hermon [and not with her and Guillaume du Toit in AAn't Pad, Stellenbosch? Does that suggest he is older enough to own land when her arrives? If so, it's a bit of a tight squeeze for his mom to go on to produce 3 more daughters after this? - Sharon]
  • 2) and Jeanne (marries Andre Gauch and Peter Becker)
  • 3) and Joost - brother and sister of Abraham.

[Does this mean Sara came with her 3 small / or not so small children? - Sharon]

  • 4) and Marie Madeleine le Clercq (d 1721) - who comes from Flandres with her husband (Jacques de Savoye, who she married in Zeeland in 1686) and her 3 children [producing 3 children by April 1688 suggests multiple births; or children prior to the marriage; or that perhaps all of the 3 children were incorrectly attributed to her. Maybe the le Clercq children of Sara Cochet? - Sharon]

[Is this Marie, perhaps Sara Cochet's sister-in-law with whom she emigrates as a widow / or finding herself a widow on the trip?]

That Guillaume Dutoit was an older man than Francois is suggested by the fact that he was engaged to the widow Sara Cochet, one of whose sons Abraham came to the Cape in 1688 as a soldier in the company’s service aboard the Oosterland. Sara Cochet’s first husband was Pieter de Klerk of Serooskerke, north of Middelburg, who died in or before 1687, the year of her arrival at the Cape. The name De Klerk was doubtless originally Le Clercq and the family of French language descent, probably from the north-east of France or the Spanish Netherlands. It is difficult to determine to what extent the De Klerks of the Cape were French-speaking. In addition to Abraham, born at Serooskerke, there was another son Joost at the Cape from the same locality in Zeeland and a daughter Jeanne, born in Middelburg. Sara Cochet, who married Guillaume Dutoit on May 16, 1688, was born in Oost- Souburg, north-east of the port of Flushing. * Boucher.M (1981). French speakers at the Cape: The European Background. Sara (Couchet) le Clercq has French origins. NOTICE: See conversation: Hard to find a baptismal record until we sort out the family... Using the spelling as indexed on the Zeeuwen Gezocht, we find the following records of interest at Walcheren: 14 Jan 1674 - Barendt son of Pieter Abrahamsen de Clerck and Sara Barendtsen Casset11 Oct 1671 - Abraham son of Pieter Abrahamsen de Clerck and Sara Barendts Casset18 May 1670 - Abraham son of Pieter Abrahamsen de Clerck and Sara Barendts Corset Now Sara's husband Pieter Abrahamsen is, based on his patronymic, not the son of Pieter but of Abraham - which means that
