About Sergeant Zachariah Baldwin, (I)

He was nicknamed Zachary and oftentimes referred to as Sergeant Baldwin. As the seventh of nine children, he was left fatherless at the age of five.

He served as town auditor in 1696 and was a representative for Milford in the General Assembly from 1705 to 1718 for fourteen sessions. In 1709, he was listed as one of the original purchasers and proprietors of the township of New Milford. Other ancestors were also included such as Sergeant Miles Merwin, Job Prince, Richard Platt and Governor Robert Treat.

He was married to Mary Atkinson, daughter of Luke and Mary (Platt) Atkinson. They had three children and she died sometime before 1691. He married a second time to the widow of Ezekiel Sanford of Milford. Zachary and Mary had eight children.

The Last Will and Testament of Zachariah Baldwin Late of Milford Decd: Exhibited for this Court on ye 19: Day of June Last, and proved by oath of the witnesses is now approved for Record, and Eliza Baldwin nominated sole Executrix therein, accepted the trust, and gave Bond with surety well to performe the same in ye sum 1500:

The Last Will and Testament of Zachariah Baldwin of Milford In the County of New Haven in ye Colony of Conecticut in New England.

In the Name of God Amen I Zachariah Baldwin being Indisposed in Body yet of perfect and Sound mind and memory and understanding Do make this my Last will and Testament ~

Imprs. I Give and Bequeath my soul into the hands of God through Jesus Christ, who Gave it me through whom I hope for Salvation and a Glorious Resurrection at ye Last Day, and as to the worldly Goods God hath Given me. I Give and Bequeath as hereafter followeth and my body to a Decent Buriall at the discretion of my Executor hereafter named.

1stly. I Give and Bequeath to my Loving wife Elizabeth Baldwin one third part of my moveable Estate to her and her heirs for ever: and the one half of my housing, and Land and meadow During her naturall Life (but if she shall marry then one third only).

2ly. I Give and Bequeath unto my Loving wife Elizabeth, and my four youngest Children all the Corn Grain of all sorts, that shall be in my house at ye time of my death also all the corn and grain that shall be in my Barne or on any of my Land, and also all my Swine and also all the Apples and Fruite that shall be in my house or on ye trees growing or on the ground and all my Cyder.

I give unto my wife Elizabeth and my son Richard the Little mare so called and two steers one year old now.

I Give and Bequeath unto my Son Solomon besides what I have already given him one half acre of meadow at ye Round meadow so called to be next to his own to him and his heirs for ever, and also four acres of Land lying on Round meadow Hill lying next to Josiah Platt as it is now fenced in to him and his heirs (the use of the said 1/2 acre of meadow and four acres of Land to be to my wife Elizabeth dureing her life.

Item I Give and Bequeath unto my Son Zachariah Besides what I have Given him already all my Right in ye two Indian purchases so called, to him & his heirs forever and also all my Right in hogg meadow purchase so called to him and his heirs for ever.

Item I Give and Bequeath unto my two sons Stephen Baldwin and Richard Baldwin my home lott in New Milford, and also 3/4 of all my Land in New Milford not yet disposed of by me to them and their heirs for ever to be equally divided between them. Also I give unto my sd. two sons Stephen and Richard my dwelling house barne homelot and all my Land in Milford and meadow Lands not disposed of by me within ye bounds of Milford [to] them their heirs assigns equally, also I Give unto my Sons Stephen and Richard, all my plow irons axes and all carts and Implements made of Iron & steel (but my wife shall have the use of all plow irons carts axes all Implements made of Iron and Steel Dureing her widdowhood) and to their heirs and assignes for ever all in Equall parts.

I Give and Bequeath unto my Sons Solomon Stephen and Richard Baldwin all my Right for the Common and Sequestred Lands So Called in Milford to them and their heirs for ever.

I Give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary besides what shee hath already Received three pounds she to Receive it when Richard comes of age to be paid by Stephen and Richard out of their parts.

I Give unto my Daughter Elizabeth besides what she hath already had twenty shillings.

I Give unto my Daughter Sussanna besides what she hath already had ten shillings.

I Give unto my Son Ebenezer besides what he hath had five shillings.

I Give and Bequeath unto my two daughters Temperance Baldwin and Sarah Baldwin all my moveable Estate not before Given to be Equally Divided between them and also they shall have Liberty to dwell in my house so long as they live a single life.

My will is that my Executor shall Receive and pay all my Just debts and pay the Legacies herein Given ~ and I do hereby nominate and appoint my wife Elizabeth to be my sold Executrix of this my Last will and testament. In witness whereof I have set to my hand and seal in Milford Aprill 9th: 1722.

Samuel Beech, Josiah Platt and Stephen Miles the three witnesses subscribing made Solemn oath yt they saw Zachar: Baldwin Late of Milford Decd: sign seal and publish the foregoing Instrument as his Last will and testament and yt he was of sound mind and memory at ye Doing thereof avowing to the best of their knowledge and yt they all subscribed as witnesses in presence of the Testator.

The aforesaid Elizabeth Baldwin is appointed Guardian to Richard Baldwin a minor son of the aforesaid Zachariah Baldwin Decd. on bond of 300.
