Hester “Esther”, daughter of John Bond and Hester Blakely, was born in September 1655 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony. The various sources have two different birth dates – September 3 [1] and September 25.[2] It is unknown which is correct, but the records are mostly in chronological order and Hester’s birth is listed after a birth of a child on September 13.

Esther was married in Newbury about 1673 to Aquila Chase II, son of Aquila Chase and Anna Wheeler Chase. No marriage record has been found.

Esther’s husband, Aquila, “…was a husbandman and inherited his father’s homestead on North Atkinson street in what is now Newburyport.” [3]

Children of Aquila and Esther, all born in Newbury:

  • 1. Esther, b. 18 Nov. 1674, married Daniel Merrill. Jan. 15, 1674. [4]

  • 8. Benjamin, b. about 1691, married Sarah Bayley.
  • 9. Rebecca, b. about 1694, married first Jonathan Moulton, second Robert Savory. (Estimated from age at time of death.)

After Aquila’s death in 1720, “Esther Chase, widow and Joseph Chase son of Aquila Chase of Newbury dec’d, were appointed administrators of the estate of Aquila……”[3] It is unknown exactly when Esther died, but on 8 July 1723 she signed (with an ‘X’) Aguila’s probate papers.

Brief Biography

Sergeant Aquila was born in Newbury (now known as Newbury Port), Massachusetts, the son of Aquila Chase (Sr.) and Ann Wheeler. Sgt. Aquila and his six sisters and four brothers were of the first generation of Chase's to be born in the United States, as their father, Aquila Chase, Sr., and his Brother Thomas, who were born in England, are believed to be the first Chase's to immigrate to America, in about 1640.

Sgt. Aquila married Esther Bond (dau. of John Bond and Esther Blakeley) in 1673 in Newbury, where they raised nine children: Esther, b. 1674, Joseph, b. 1677, Anne, b. 1679, Priscilla, b. 1681, Rebecca, b. 1684, Jemina, b. about 1687, Hannah, b. 1689, Abigail, b. about 1690, and Benjamin, b. about 1692.

He was a farmer and inherited his father's homestead on North Atkinson St. in Newbury Port.

He was chosen to be a "fence viewer" (town official who administered fence laws and settled property line disputes) at the upper end of Newbury March 18, 1683/4 and took the oath of allegiance in 1678.

He was a member of the town committee Dec. 12, 1702, and a soldier under the command of Capt. Thomas Noyes in 1688. Later he was sergeant of that company. He also owned many acres of salt marsh by the Plum Island River which was known as "Chase Island".

Sgt. Aquila Chase died 29 July, 1729, in Newbury, MA.

Connie Lull Frey and Carmen W. Missildine, Ancestors and Descendants of Timothy Seymour Lull, Chase Family and our connection to Salmon P. Chase" Salmon Portland Chase (1808-1873) was a member of Abraham Lincoln's "Team of Rivals". He was an overly ambitious, pompous and self-serving man who usually chose to further his own aspirations for fame over serving Lincoln (see Doris Kearns Goodwin's book, Team of Rivals ). He served as Lincoln's Sec of Treasury during the Civil War. Lincoln later named him to the post of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. I had a hunch that the Chase members of our family tree might be related to Salmon Chase and, indeed they were. Salmon's father, Ithamar (1762-1817) is the son of Dudley (1730-1814) who is the son of Samuel (1707-1800) who is the son of Moses (1663-1743). Moses is the brother of our Thomas Chase. Thomas and Moses were the sons of Aquila Chase of Chesham, England [origins not yet proven]. Aquila is the first member of the Chase family to emigrate from England to New England in 1640.
