Born in Fayette County, PA; son of Jacob Shockey and Rachel Kemp. he went by his middle name, Henry.

He married Eva Ann Larkin April 8, 1855, in Washington County OH, which union produced seven children.Eva died in childbirth.

He served as a Union Soldier during the Civil War; at age 32, he was described as being five feet nine inches tall, with fair complexion and dark hair and blue eyes. He was enrolled in Company K of the 16th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry on February 11, 1862, and re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer with the rank of sergeant on February 12, 1865.

Secondly, married Nancy Mahaley White on March 25, 1869 in Oakland Allegany County MD, which union produced six children.

He was a farmer after the Civil War, who lived in West Virginia and Arkansas. Henry died in Montgomery County Arkansas.
