James and his brothers William and Augustus were enlisted in Company H, Brooks' Regiment of the Arkansas Infantry, CSA (also known as 2d Regiment and 34th Regiment) on August 25, 1862 at Mt. Comfort by T. W. Wallace for a period of 3 years. He progressed from Private to 1st Sergeant. He moved to Grayson Co., TX in 1873.
