John Hoyt's parents are unknown. The information provided by J Cornelius Haight in Silas Constant is unproven with no known records from Upwey.

Simon Hoyte,was the son of John Hoyt and Ruth Smith, baptized 1/20/1590. On 12/2/1612, he married Deborah Stowers, daughter of Walter and unknown Stowers, baptized 5/1/1593.

They had six children born in Dorchester and baptized at Upwey.

John Hoyt died on 28 Feb 1687/8 in Amesbury. He married first Frances Unknown. She died on 23 Feb 1642/3, apparently in childbirth, in Salisbury. He married second Frances Unknown, perhaps Tuxbury.

John took the oath of fidelity on 1 Oct 1650. He took the freeman's oath on 31 Mar 1663. He was frequently on the grand jury on 13 Apr 1652 (1;252), 14 Apr 1663 (3;56), 9 Apr 1667 (3;404), 12 Oct 1669 (4;183) and 9 Apr 1678 (6;427). He was chosen selectman in Mar 1681/2. He was moderator of the town meeting in Apr 1687. He was the sergeant of the Salisbury militia company.

5. Thomas Hoyt and Thomas Johnson were admonished and fined on 29 Mar 1664 for being disorderly away fromt heir master Walter Taylor. Walter was fined for cursing his servants. 6. Naomi Hoyt was born on 23 Jan 1654/5 in Newbury. She married first John Lovejoy on 23 Mar 1677/8 in Andover. [Ref, p. 56] He died on 14 Jul 1680 [Ref, 8;56] in Andover. She married second Richard Stratton after 1684. Richard was the son of Samuel and Mary (Frye) Stratton. Naomi Lovejoy, administratrix of her deceased husband's estate, presented his inventory to court on 30 Nov 1680.
7. Naomi Lovejoy was fined for fornication with Benjamin Abbott in Jun 1683. [Ref, 9;59] In 1684, they had an illegitimate daughter [Ref, 9;427] in Andover.
8. Dorothy Hoyt was born on 13 Apr 1656 in Salisbury. Dorothy was charged with putting on men's clothes. As she had left the county, her father John appeared in court in her stead on 25 Sep 1677. He admitted that she was guilty and said that she was penitent. It was ordered that she be severely whipped when she returned unless her father paid a fine of 40 s. [Ref, 6;341]
9. Mehitable Hoyt was born on 25 Oct 1664 in Salisbury

Sgt Mgr John Hoyt of Massachusetts was not the son of Simon and Jone Hoyt. According to Upwey records that no longer exist, he may have been born in 1614, the son of a possible Simon and Deborah Hoyt, who were married in 1612, according to records that no longer exist.

In his Hoyt family history publication in 1857, David Hoyt stated there were two John Hoyts, one in Massachusetts who died in 1688 and one in Connecticut who died in 1684. David Hoyt could not connect the Massachusetts John Hoyt with Simon Hoyt. Recent DNA evidence confirms the lack of a connection. Also, doubtful Simon and Jone would have a son born three years before they married in a location 50 miles away. They were called out for having a son Christopher born out of wedlock.

In addition, John Hoyt, the sixth child of Simon and Jone Hoyt, may be the John Hoyt, son of Simon, baptized in Broadwindsor, December 25, 1628, which would fit him as the youngest child. As a Jone Stoodley, daughter of John Stoodley, was also baptized in 1596 in this church, which sits a short distance from the Marshwood church where a Jone Stoodley married a Simon Hoyt in 1617, her family may have lived there, and the Hoyts had their son baptized during a Christmas visit with the in-laws and named him after his grandfather. This would be their last opportunity, as they left for America the following year.

(John Hoyt's daughters, Mary, who probably married Hachaliah Brown, and Rachel, who married John Horton [not Norton], were apparently born in the early 1650s, as they married men born in the 1640s; we know that the widow of Francis Purdy had married John Hoyt because her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth (Brown) Purdy, in 1678 asked that "my father John Hoit and my brother Thomas Browne might stand overseers, or my brother Hacaliah Browne," but Francis Purdy died in 1658. His name does not appear on a passenger list and no record is available showing the date of his arrival in this country.

He may have been a minor at the time of his arrival but there is no record of his parentage.

He was one of the original settlers of Salisbury, MA. He showed up on a plantation, called Colchester, about 1620. First mention of John was his name in the register, in regard to changing the name of Colchester to Salisbury in the year 1640.

He was chosen selectman in 1682 and moderator of the town meetings in April 1687.

John lived on the other side of the Pow Wow River, that side of the river was later changed to Amesbury (Emesbury.)

John held just about every official position to be had in Salisbury including Sgt. in the militia.

Property belonging to him included clay pits which helped make bricks for the town.

He was a planter and husbandman.

John was born about 1625, the fourth son of Great Migration emigrant Simon Hoyt,

by Simon's first wife, (name unknown).[1]

He married first by 1650, Unknown (Unknown). He married second, about 1659, Mary (Brundish) Purdy, widow of Francis Purdy.[1]

Our evidence that John married the widow of Francis Purdy was that in 1678, her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth

(Brown) Purdy, in 1678 requested that "my father John Hoit and my brother Thomas Browne might stand overseers, or my brother Hacaliah Browne,' but Francis Purdy died in 1658 [FOOF 1:495-96].)[1]

John married twice: first Unknown (Unknown), and second, Mary (Brundish) Purdy, widow of Francis Purdy. John left a will in which he mentioned his wife Mary, two daughters, and "two youngest sons," hinting that there may have been other children.

Fairfield, Connecticut

We find John Hoyt in town records of Fairfield from 1650 to 1683 when he sold 22 acres, including his dwelling house and barn to Peter Clapham. John had not lived in Fairfield for some years at this point.

According to Baird, John Hoyt (Hoitt) was born at Fairfield, removed to East Chester in 1665, then to Rye in 1676 where he was living as early as 1678 on Apawamis, "Budd's Neck," or Rye Neck, probably toward the southern end.[2]

East Chester, Westchester County, New York

John Hoyt was the third to sign the original Articles of Agreement between the inhabitants of Eastchester in 1665, and he was one of the original patentees in 1666.

Rye, New York

Just a few years before his death, John removed from Eastchester to Rye. In 1682, we find reference to his land in Eastchester as "formerly of John Hoyt." Baird reports that John was not one of the original proprietors of Rye; he probably purchased his land from one of the original settlers.[2]

John died before September 15, 1684 (inventory) at Rye, New York.[2]

THE last will and Testament of John Hoit of Rye who Committs his body to the Grave and his spirit to God who Gave it and for my outward substance which God of his goodness hath Given me I dispose of as followeth FIRST I will and bequeathe unto my Loveing wife Mary Hoit On third parte of all my moveables she to have Her choice of them and my house and orchard and four acres of Land Lyeing below the Orchard and on acre of Salt Meadow Iyeing by the bridge this above menconed house orchard & lands I give to my wife dureing her life and then to Returne to my two youngest sons John Hoitt and Simon Hoit and if my wife Remain a widdow and need Require I Give her full power to sell some of this said Land for her Comfort Alsoe, I doe will and bequeath unto my two sons John Hoit and Simon Hoit all my Lands and Right In Lands In Rye their mothers Right only Excepted Alsoe I doe will and bequeath Unto my two daughters Mary Brown and Rachell Norton the two thirds of all my moveables Each of them One third Only the abovesaid Rachell Norton hath Receaved Six pownds which six pounds Is to bee discounted of of her third part and an Equall distribution to bee made between them and for my depts I order to bee paid out of the moveables FURTHERMORE It is my will if Either of my two youngest sons John or Simon should dye In their nonage the surviveing to have all the Lands. John Hoyt born about 1615 - parentage is unknown. He is not to be confused with John Hoyt born 1625, whose parents were Simon Hoyt and Jane. Source: "A Genealogical History of the Hoyt, Haight and Hight Families" by David W. Hoyt pg. 15 AND The Hoyt-Haight Genealogy by Jared L. Olar. Mr. Olar states: These same -named colonists lived and died around the same time, but lived in different places, married different women, and had different children. (In addition, DNA testing has established that Sgt. John Hoyt of Salisbury was not related to the Simon Hoyt family of which John Hoyt of Fairfield was a member)
