The initials SB engraved on the bottom are those of John Foster and of his niece Silence Baker. The date “19th Sept. 81’’ engraved upon it is that of the death of John Foster, the ingenious printer and mathematician who designed the arms for the Colony of Massachusetts — an Indian with a bow and arrow. Silence Baker married Joseph Eliot whose grandfather was a brother of the celebrated apostle to the Indians. The caudle cup was given, at Silence Eliot’s death in 1744, to the Hollis Street Church, Boston, which is not now in existence. The entire service of sixteen pieces from this church has been fittingly placed in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, as a permanent loan. The Eliot cup is one of the few pieces which bear the mark of Robert Sanderson (1608–93) without that of his partner John Hull (1624–83)
