Biography

Massachusetts Colony

From John Maltby:
Simeon Washburn, probably second son of James Washburn Jr., and Elizabeth Leonard, born, say 1725, married:

Jemima Gary, daughter of Stephen and Mercy (Gilbert) Gary, of Taunton,[1] in ca. 1746.[2] She was a granddaughter of Eleazer and Elizabeth (Crane) Gilbert, of Taunton,[3] and a great-granddaughter of Henry and Tabitha (Kinsley) Crane.[4]
On 4 May 1717 Stephen Gary and his wife Mercy signed a receipt for her share of the estate of her father, Eleazer Gilbert, of Taunton, to her “father in law” [stepfather] George Townsen and mother Elizabeth Townsen, administrators of the estate of Eleazer Gilbert.[5]

The will of Stephen Gary, of Taunton, “labourer,” dated 2 Feb. 1749/50, and probated on 12 Feb. 1749/50, mentioned, among others, his daughter Jemima.[6] Simeon Washburn, of Attleborough, and wife Jemima, signed receipt for legacy from the estate of her father, Stephen Gary, of Taunton, on 23 Mar. 1756.[7]

On 10 Dec. 1751 Simeon Washburn purchased land in Attleborough from Timothy Martin, and from Jeremiah Fisher,[8] and Simeon and Jemima Washburn settled in Attleborough, Bristol Co., MA. They may have lived near the border with Rehoboth. Their children’s births were recorded in Rehoboth, with the exception of the first son Simeon, with a note saying “the first 8 of this family born in Attleboro,” and were baptized in the Second Congregational Church in Attleborough, with the exception of daughter Jemima, and those who probably died in infancy. On 9 Mar. 1762 Simeon Washburn purchased land in Rehoboth, MA, from Henry Joslin Jr.,[9] on 9 June 1762 he purchased land in Rehoboth from Amos Brown,[10] and on 18 Aug. 1764 he purchased land in Taunton from Seth Gary.[11] Simeon Washburn sold his land in Attleborough to Obadiah Carpenter on 24 May 1762.[12] He sold land in Rehoboth to David Perry on 10 Mar. 1763,[13] and to Daniel Perry on 16 Mar. 1764,[14] sold his land in Taunton on 31 Aug. 1764 to Aaron Pratt,[15] and he sold land in Rehoboth to Joshua Briggs Jr. on 31 Oct. 1765.[16] He also sold land in Rehoboth to William Dryer Jr. on 29 Nov. 1774.[17] Eventually Simeon and Jemima Washburn moved to Keene, Cheshire Co., NH. He was not a head of household in Massachusetts or New Hampshire in the 1790 federal census, but he was probably the Simeon Washburn living in Cheshire Co., NH, in the 1800 federal census.[18]

On 16 June 1780 Ebenezer Wheelock was paid $258 by James Claghorn, Commissioner for the Sale of Confiscated Estates of Vermont, for 2 days service including expenses, in search of the mother of Ebenezer Washburn. Wheelock rode from Springfield, VT, to Keene, NH, in order to obtain the deed to the confiscated land of Washburn in Rutland, VT, which was thought to have been kept by the mother of Ebenezer Washburn.[19] Simeon Washburn died on 27 Oct. 1802 in Keene, NH, and Jemima (Gary) Washburn died on 11 Nov. 1804 in Keene, NH.[20]

Simeon Washburn and Jemima Gary had children, including:
