from Edwin Hedstrom's research: Simon Beman came to America in 1635 and settled in Springfi eld, Massachusetts. His age is unknown. In the same year fo ur other young Beemn men came to America. They were origina lly listed as Thomas Beemont, age 29, William Beamond, ag e 27, John Bemaond, age 23 and Gamaliel Beamont, age 12. I t has been suggested that all these young men were from th e same family, but as yet that is unproved. The Beemans probably came from Staffordshire or Shropshire , England. The Magistrate who administered the oath of allegiance, which w as required of all those leaving England, to William and John was from Briclge nworth, Shropshire. Researchers in the late 19th and early 20th century believe d the Beeman name was originally the Norman "Beaumont". from Dawes-Gates, p 105 - 106: The earliest known record of Simon Beamon shows him to hav e been a resident of Springfield, Massachusetts, at least a s early as 1648. The account books of William Pynchon sho w debits and credits to Simon from 1648 to 1675 and to hi s widow and sons after that date. On Mary 26, 1648, the bil l of goods charged to Simon Beamon carries evidence that h e was still a bachelor. A charge in 1653 suggests that he w as about to take up, or to continue in the shoemaker's trad e. Following this there are a number of entries in these bo oks which show that Mr. Pynchon gave him cvredit for mendin g and making shoes, for going on "voyages to Pequot," "dow n the falls" etc. Simon married in Springfield, December 15, 1654, Alice Youn g. He purchased a three-acre home lot, three acres of meado w and four acres of woodland. He received grants of a thre e acre home lot, three acres of wet meadow and fourteen acr es of woodland in february, 1653, and sold all three piece s on October 4, 1654. another grant, on May 17, 1653, compr ised two polts of twelve and four acres, respectively, loca ted at Skipmuck. Additional lands given him were six acre s on March 12, 1661-2 fourteen acres of December 8, 1664, e ight acres adjoining the last tract and five or six acres o f meadow on January 5, 1665, and various other small parcel s. He was appointed one of the fence viewers on February 13,1 670. He died between August 17, 1675, when the last charg e against him was made on Pynchon's books, and September 26 , 1676, when his widow filed an inventory of his estate tot alling L84-15-06, including his shoemaker's tools and hous e and land at Skipmuck. On the morning of October 5, 1675, the Indians burned dow n the town of Springfield, killing some of the inhabitants . It is possible that the Beamon home was one of those dest royed for, at a town meeting on February 3, 1679, "the Tow n being disirous to accommodate the poor sidow Beamon wth s ome Land to set an house vpon" appointeda committee "to se e where they may wth most conveniency to her &: lest inconv eniency to the high ways & passages lay to her about a quar ter of an Acre to set a building vpon." "Allice Bemon of Sp ringfield, widow, was sick and died October 5, 1708." from LDS Family History Library: Title: Some Massachusetts & Utah descendants to about 188 0 of Simon Beman, who died 1676 at Springfield, Massachusetts Authors: Beeman, Clarence E. , 1886- (Main Author) Notes: Microfilm of typescript (carbon copy, [6] leaves). Simon Beman was born in England and immigrated in 1635 to S pringfield, Massachusetts. He married Alice Young in 1654. They had thi rteen children. Descendants lived at Massachusetts, Connecticut , New York, and elsewhere. Descendants spelled their name Beman and Beeman . Direct descendant Louisa Beeman (1815-1850) married Joseph Smith , Jr. in 1841 and, after his death, married Brigham Young. She had four c hildren. Her sister, Artimesia, married Erastus Snow and had five children. She died in 1882 at St. George, Utah.
