GEDCOM Note

Thomas Beeman first started appearing in records as an adult. His origins are unknown at this time. He was married to Phebe Parke, probably at Preston, Connecticut by early 1715 and four of his oldest children were baptized there (Thomas, 1715; Ebenezer, 1719; Daniel, 1721; Ruth, 1722). Phebes father had been living at Shelter Island, New York shortly before the estimated date of her marriage, so it is possible that Thomas Beeman was from New York. He was of Preston, Connecticut, when he purchased property in nearby Voluntown in November 1715 and he sold it in April 1722. I dont know if he ever actually lived there. In April 1719 he was granted nine acres in Preston by the town proprietors. This property was laid out to him in July 1721. In the meantime, he had purchased property in Stonington in 1716. In February 1723, while still of Preston, he sold the Stonington property and also the nine acres he had been granted in Preston. Later that year, he was of Stonington when he purchased 100 acres there.
wiki-
Probably not this Thomas: Thomas Beaman, son of Symon Beamon, was born 29th10m 1660. (Dec. 29, 1660), in Springfield, Massachusetts.[1] This date is frequently misread as October 29, 1660. Thomas the son of Symon would have been 55 when he married Phebe and 78 when he left Preston, Connecticut, to go to Kent, Connecticut. This is highly unlikely, as is the pattern of moves, this indicates. Frank Starr in "Various Ancestral Lines of James Goodwin and Lucy (Morgan) Goodwin" reports there are no further records for Thomas the son of Symon.[2]

The Beeman Genealogy. by Roger Beeman states that Thomas is the son of one Captain Daniel Beeman, and that Thomas is believed to have been born in Springfield, Massachusetts in Oct 1680.[3] This is an obvious stretching of the mistaken birthof Thomas of Springfield to fit the other facts in his life.

October 15,1690[citation needed] is probably another stretch of the mistaken birth of Thomas of Springfield.

Marriage & Life

Thomas Beeman married Phebe Parke about 1712, probably in Preston, where he purchased and was granted land. He also purchased land in nearby Voluntown, Connecticut and was of Stonington, Connecticut, about 1723.

When the future town of Kent was opened for sale, Thomas became an early grantee of land, although he may still have resided in Stonington for some of these years. He received 2nd Division land in Sept 1738, 3rd division in May 1739, 4th Division land in May 1740, 5th division land in May 1748 and 6th in 1750. His heirs were granted land in the next division in 1752.[4]He also purchased land there.

Death and Will

Thomas Beeman, d. Nov. 16, 1750, in Kent, Litchfield, Connecticut. [5]

The will of Thomas BEMAN of Kent, Litchfield, Connecticut was dated 22 Sept 1750. After a typical opening paragraph, he makes various bequests to: his wife Phebe, to sons Daniel and Joseph, daughter Ruth Morris, sons Thomas, Ebenezer, John and Park. See "The Descendants of Thomas Beeman of Kent Connecticut" for the full will. [6]

MIsc

From Genforum:[7] I have a copy of the Parke family genealogy and it lists Thomas Beman's father as Simon. Please see "The Parke Scrapbook" Number 2 "Including Family History of the first Five Generations in America, after Robert Parke, who came to America 1630" it is again stated in Vol 3 that he is the son of Simon Beman and Alice Young, both of these genealogies are available at the Connecticut State Library Archives in the Genealogy section. Thomas is listed as being from Stonington in the Kent town history, he purchased the proprietor lot at the Windham land auctions in 1738. "Democracy in the Connecticut Frontier Townof Kent" by Grant, Columbia University Press, lists the sale of lot 46 to John Beeman, Original Proprietor Thomas Beeman's brother, they list the colonial records of Kent (Historical Society) and Church records as sources of their book. Take a look at New England Genealogical Society, Boston MA. Thomas B. Warren's compilation of Springfield families and note the first names in the list of deeds (Daniel's Estate) on page 47 and there are Ruth, Abigail, Alice, Thomas, Daniel among others as beneficiaries of Simon's son Daniel's will. If this is indeed true then this Thomas could be Simon's son. It needs to be checked out.

Simon Beman, father of Thomas and the original immigrant t o America, spelled his surname with one "e" according to the first available r ecords. Thomas's children apparently all used two e's. it is not known wheth er Thomas was known as "Beman" or "Beeman" but the use of just one "e" is assum ed. There has been considerable discussion about the age of Tho mas with respect to the ages of his children. However, ther e is evidence in the Springfield, Massachusetts records tha t he originally went to Wethersfield , Connecticut, was mar ried and his wife died withourt issue. He then moved to th ePrescott City area where he married Phoebe Parks, who wa s about 25 years younger than he. The fact that Phoebe's yo ungest son appears to be named after her maiden surname add s evidence to the tie between the two generations. Also, th ere are several Phoebes in the second and third generation s following for additional evidence.

In February 1723, while still of Preston, he sold the Stonington property and also the nine acres he had been granted in Preston. Later that year, he was of Stonington when he purchased 100 acres there. === In October 1734, the general assembly held at New Haven passed an act that would allow settlement in an area bordering westerly on the Housatonic. As a condition, purchasers had to agree to build a house at least 18 feet square within two years and fence a portion of the property. Thomas began acquiring property in Kent early in 1738. He was still of Stonington as late as May 1739when he was granted and traded property in Kent. The first record I found in which he was of Kent was a deed signed in July 1741. He continued buying and selling property in Kent over the next few years and there was one deed to a Thomas of Litchfield, who could have been this Thomas or it may have been his son. Connecticut deeds are maintained by the towns rather than the county. It would be worthwhile to look at deeds in some of the neighboring towns. He deeded property to his sons, generally worded something like "for divers causes and consideration, but more for the parental love and affection".The last deeds I saw for him were dated in the fall of 1750. === Several articles have stated that Thomas was the son of Simon and Alice (Young) Beman of Springfield, Massachusetts, but I'm pretty sure this is not the case. If it were true, Thomas would have been 52 years old when he married and 78 years old when he packed up his family and moved to the other side of Connecticut. There is some evidence that the Thomas who was the son of Simon had died without having children, since he did not figure in the estates of several of his brothers. Simon's oldest son (also Simon) left a will in 1711 in which he mentioned his brothers Daniel and Samuel and Lemen, the son of his brother Josiah. In1741, Simon's son, Daniel, died and in 1750 his administrator was ordered to pay to the childrenof Daniel's deceased brothers Samuel, Josiah and Benjamin and deceased sisters Ruth Miller, Abigail Baldwin and Mary Miller. The brother, Samuel, had been in Windsor and later settled in Simsbury, Connecticut. Abigail, who married Obadiah Baldwin settled in New Milford, Connecticut (next to Kent). === It could be that our Thomas was one of Simon's grandchildren, rather than his son. It looks likeJosiah was the only one of the three brothers with children who was married early enough to have been Thomas' father. There are also several other possibilities: William, who married Lydia Danforth in 1643 and settled in Saybrook, Connecticut (one son, Samuel, born 1657); John, who lived in Salem and had at least two sons, one of whom was John, who married Martha Dennis before 1667 and moved to Enfield, Connecticut in 1682; and Gamaliel, who was twelve years old when he came to New England in 1635 and who settled in Lancaster, Massachusetts. He had two sons, John and Thomas, neither of whom seems to have had a son Thomas. === I checked Preston, Stonington, New London and some of the neighboring towns for any clues to Thomas' parents. There was an Abigail Bement who witnessed a deed between Edward Palmer and Thomas Parke in 1679. She could have been his mother or an aunt. Both the Simon of Springfield and the William of Saybrook families had an Abigail. Several people have claimed thatthere was a Daniel in Stonington who was Thomas's father, but I couldn't find any trace of him. === Some sources have him listed as being born 29 DEC 1660. === WILL: GenForum posting 16 Oct 1998, #57of 217 in BEEMAN Forum by Sandy McDOUGALL (sandy@mosquitonet.com) -- Thomas BEMAN of Kent, Litchfield, CT, dtd 22 Sep 1750, shows Phebe (wife), sons Daniel and Joseph, Ruth MORIS (dau), Thomas, Ebenezer, John, Park (sons). === Page:http:/www.familytreemaker.com/users/k/e/r/Janice-E-Kert/BOOK-0001 /0003-0009.html ****** Checked temple ready 10-5-2006, IGI source for ordinance dates
