Biography

Simon de Montagu came from the Montagu family, which was traced back to the Norman Drogo de Montagu, who had come to England during the Norman conquest. He was a son of William de Montagu and his wife Berthe. At the death of his father in 1270, he was still a minor, but a little later he must have taken over his father's inheritance, which mainly included possessions in Somerset.

Montagu died 26 Sep 1316 and was buried in Bruton Priory in Somerset. His heir was his son William Montagu (around 1285–1319).

Extracted from Oxford Dictionary of National Biography

"Simon was descended from Drogo de Montagu, a Norman who came to England with William the Conqueror. Simon was the son of William de Montagu, a Somerset landowner, and his wife, Berthe. He was under age at his father's death, in 1270, but fought in Edward I's wars in Wales in 1277 and 1282, and in 1283 was summoned to parliament at Shrewsbury. In 1290 he surrendered his lands in Dorset, Devon, Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire to the king, and was then regranted them with remainders to his sons William and Simon. He was summoned to fight in Gascony in 1294, where he served as marshal at Blaye. In 1296 he succeeded in breaking the French siege of Bourg-sur-Mer, taking a ship loaded with victuals through the line of French galleys. He returned to Gascony with John Hastings on royal service in 1302. It was in Scotland, however, that Montagu served the crown most. In 1298 he attended the parliament at York at which the Scottish war was discussed, and may have been present on the Falkirk campaign later that year. He certainly took part in the Caerlaverock expedition of 1300; the poet who described the army placed him at the rear of the 3rd division. Montagu's particular contribution to the wars lay in naval warfare in the Irish Sea and around the Western Isles. In 1300 he provided two substantial ships for the Scottish war, a galley and a barge, manned by 100 men between them. In 1307 he was captain and governor of the English fleet, and admiral in 1310. He continued to be summoned to campaign against the Scots until his death."[1]

Montagu had probably been married three times. Around 1270 he had married Hawise, a daughter of Amaury de St Amand. After her death before 1287, he married Isabel in a second marriage, whose origin is unknown.

Apparently in 1304 he married Aufrica de Connoght. She was probably a relative of Magnus, the last king of the Isle of Man. Therefore, she claimed the island as an heir, which had meanwhile been occupied by England. In 1305, she ceded her claims to the island to Montagu. 2] Perhaps because of these claims, he conquered the Isle of Man around 1310.[ 3]

... Sir Simon [I] married Aufricia, daughter of Fergus, King of Man, descended from Orry, King of Denmark. The Historian records that Aufricia, daughter of Fergus, King of Man, having fled to King Edward when dispossessed by Alexander III, King of Scots, Edward bestowed her in marriage upon Simon, Lord Montague, baron of Shipton Montague, who, by the King's assistance, recovered the island and enjoyed it in her right many years. Their issue was William and Simon, the former succeeded his father and continued the line, the latter was married to Hawise, daughter of Almeric, Lord St. Amand. "Montagu's first marriage, about 1270, was to Hawise, daughter of Amaury de St Amand. Shortly after her death in 1287 he married Isabel, whose parentage is unknown. It seems probable that in 1304 he married Aufrica de Connoght, who claimed to be heir to the Isle of Man, for in that year she handed over her rights in the isle to him. Man had come under Scottish control in 1265, but was annexed to England by Edward I in 1290." (ibid)
