Alan Frederick James de Rutzen, born 4 July 1876, succeeded to Slebech on the death of his uncle, Baron Rudolph, in 1915. At that time he was serving abroad in the Middle East as a lieutenant in The Pembrokeshire Yeomanry. In July 1916, a detachment under command of Lieutenant Baron de Rutzen left The Pembrokeshire Yeomanry at Wadi Natrum to join the Imperial Camel Corps. The detachment saw immediate action, and on 7 August the Baron was killed at the battle of Kattia, near El Arish, in the Sinai desert.
He married on 28 April 1908, Eleanor Etna Audley Thursby-Pelham, daughter of Captain Pelham Thursby-Pelham of Abermarlais Park, Carmarthenshire, by Emily Florence only daughter of Henry Foley, D.L. After her husband's death she married on 2 December 1918 to Captain George William Fisher Foley-Philipps. She died on 3 December 1945. Baron A. F. J. de Rutzen left an only son,
