When Alexander Schaw of Sauchie and Greenock married Elizabeth Cunningham of Glengarnock in 1539, it was agreed that the lands of West Greenock would go to the heirs male from that marriage. However, Alexander had two natural sons prior to his marriage with Elizabeth named James and Patrick who were legitimised in 1546 shortly before their father’s death. James became Laird of Sauchie and the wine cellar job continued with that branch of the family. Accounts of the Schaws of Sauchie can be found in Genealogical Notes Anent Some Ancient Scottish Families by David Marshall (1884) and Ancient Castles and Mansions of Stirling Nobility by J.S.Fleming (1902)

Notes

“Old Greenock: Embracing Sketches of Its Ecclesiastical, Educational, and ...” By George Williamson. Page 13 - 14 GoogleBooks

John Schaw, the subject of this sketch, was the only son of the marriage between Sir Alexander Schaw of Sauchie, and his second wife, Elizabeth Cuninghame, daughter of William Cuninghame of Glengarnock. There were also two daughters of the marriage, -Jonet, who died unmarried, and Mary, who married Sir Henry Bruce, ninth Baron of Clackmannan. On other authority, entitled to every respect, it has been affirmed that there was a third daughter of this marriage, Elizabeth, said to have been mistress to James V., and mother of James, Abbot of Melrose, to whom, as well as to James VI., the celebrated George Buchanan was tutor.

5 Jonet Schaw died in 1573. The inventory of her personal estate was given up “be John Schaw of Grenok, hir brother germane, executour datiue decernit to hir, be decreit of the Commissary of Edinburgh," -Confirmation issued in 1580. (Reg. Com. Ed., vol. viii.) This proves beyond doubt that Jonet and John were sister and brother german. In the absence of anything to the contrary, Mary was also a sister german ; but doubts have been cast on the paternity of Elizabeth, who is asserted by some to have been daughter of James Schaw, John's brother consanguinean, but the dates contradict this. (Crawfurd's “Writs of Sauchie.”)

From what follows it would appear that John was born towards the end of the reign of James V., and that he was the youngest of the family. ...

Alexander "John" Schaw was born about 1500 at Sauchie, Clackmannashire, Scotland. He lived at Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. He was therefore known as Sir Alexander Shaw of Sauchie and Greenock.

Alexander was the son of James Shaw of Sauchie and Greenock and Alison Home, a wealthy couple who enjoyed the grace and favor of King James IV. They often attended court at Stirling Castle during the reign of King James V.

Alexander grew up with at least one brother, John, and a sister, Elizabeth.

According to palace legends, Sir Alexander was either the brother or the father of the Elizabeth Shaw who became mistress to King James V in the year 1528. She is listed here on WikiTree as Alexander's younger sister, born in 1510.

Alexander married Elizabeth Cunningham, daughter of Sir William Cunningham of Glengarnock and Elizabeth Helen Sinclair.[1] They reared several children

Mary Queen of Scots acceded to the throne and was crowned at Stirling Castle in 1542.

Sir Alexander Shaw of Sauchie and Greenock died before 1563, leaving behind him a large family and a large fortune.

"The following information is sourced under each individual however for a quick summary .... this gives an overview of the family between 1550 and 1690."[2]

Alexander appears to have had six children:

The eldest son, James, received Sauchie and Greenock plus other lands about 1547. James In turn had four children of his own (Alexander's grandchildren):

  1. The eldest son, James, received Sauchie and a title about 1590;
  2. The second son, John, received Greenock about 1590;
  3. Patrick lived at Kelso with no lands. He lived on land near Largs. He had his own sons: William, John, James and Hugh. All but William went to Ireland with the Montgomerys.
  4. Alexander's fourth son, robert, (who I originally placed placed as a son of his brother) inherited Bargarran near Bishopton and Erskine in 1594 after the death of his elder brother john. This is where the Brisbane family held their original lands in 1590.[3]. Robert had five children according to the will of His Wife Agnes Lennox in 1612.

"Alexander Shaw, then apparent of Sauchie, granted to John Shaw, his brother, a Charter of the liferent of the lands of Ryal, to which his seal is appended ; on which Crawfurd remarks, that this is the first John Shaw of Broich for certain, the date is 151 1. (Notes of Sauchie Writs.) He had a Crown Charter of the Westertown of Tulliecultre, &c, in which he is designed son and heir of James Shaw of Sauchy, knight, 8 May, 1513. (Reg. Mag. Sig., Lib. 18, No. 195.) As son and heir of the deceased Sir James Shaw of Sauchy, knight, he gave in a supplication to the king, which was granted, that in regard his lands lay in different shires he might be infeft in Clackmannan for all, 21 January, 1528. (Notes of Sauchie Writs.) He was retoured to Sir James Shaw of Sauchie, his father, in the half lands of the barony of Sauchie, with tower and fortalice of the same, then in the superior's hands for two months, 4 March, 1528, so that the father had died in January, 1 528. (Ibid.) Crawfurd mentions another " Retour of Alexander Shaw of Sauchie to James Shaw, knight, his father, in 1529." He had sasine as heir to his father in the Estate in 1529. " One of the witnesses is William Graham of Callender, whose mother was Margaret Shaw, and his father, George Graham of Callender, Montrose's brother, who was killed at Flodden. She might be aunt to Alex- ander Shaw of Sauchy." (Ibid.) He had sasine of the half lands of Findlary in the sheriffdom of Kinross, 10 May, 1529 (Writs of Finderlie) ; also, a charter under the Great Seal of the sixth part town and lands of Banchre, united to the barony of Sauchie in the shire of Clackmannan, nth September, 1529, (Reg. Mag. Sig., Lib. 23, No. 91), and a Charter of Aliena- tion by James Hamilton of Fynart of the lands of Fynart to Alexander Shaw of Sauchie, and the heirs male betwixt him and Elizabeth Cunningham, his spouse, 1539. (Notes of Sauchie Writs.) He ob- tained a Charter of Confirmation from James V. of a charter by John Brown of Sauchie in his favour of his lands of Sauchie and Balquharne, 8 February, 1536. Another charter by James Hamilton of the lands of Fynart in his favour, dated 29 February, 1539, was confirmed by one of James V., dated 31st December, 1540. (Reg. Mag. Sig., Lib. 27, No. 94, and Notes of Sauchie Writs.) In the Register of the Great Seal there is the Legitimation of James and Patrick Schaw, two natural children of Alexander Schaw of Sauchy, 1S March, 1546. (Reg. Mag. Sig., Lib. 29, No. 392.) The Testament of 14 Jonet Shaw, dochter of vmquhile Alexander Shaw of Sauchy " (who died in February, 1573), was confirmed 11 February, 1580 (Commissariot of Edinburgh). John Shaw, brother of Alexander Shaw of Sauchie, had a charter by James, Com- mendator of Melrose, Cistertionsis Ordinis, of the lands of Balinslie in Berwickshire, 1546, whereupon Crawfurd says, li This is for certain John Shaw of Broich who is after that in the Council Records."
