Was the Auditor General of Ireland. Elected to Parliament in 1613 from County of Marlow in Ireland. He had gone to Ireland in 1588 as Secretary to Sir Willam FitzWilliam, the Lord Deputy.Extracted from "The General Armory," by Burke, 1884

His arms was certified by William Roberts of Ulster King of Arms, 1645.

Or, two lions passant azure, armed and langued gules, a bordure gules thereon eight escallops or. Crest: A dragon's head or. pierced through with the shiver of a lance ppr.

James attended the best schools in England and through his father's position in the Court of Queen Elizabeth I, he obtained a positionas Secretary tp the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.

James Ware was the youngest of four sons of Christopher Ware, was very early sent to push his fortunes in the Court of Queen Elizabeth. In the year 1588 he acompanied Sir William Fitz-Willaim, lord deputy of Ireland, in the capacity of secretary. This was the first appearance of this family in the sister-kingdom. Owing to his great attention to the public affairs of Ireland, he was advanced, about six years after his arrival, to the office of clerk of the Common Pleas in the Exchequer, and shortly afterwards obtained the appointment of Auditor-General with a revisionary patent of the office in favour of his son. In the reign of James I,at the age of 42, he was knighted on 17 June 1610 and in 1613 wasreturned member of Parliament for the borough of Mallow, in the County of Cork. He appears to have acquired considerable property while thus employed in Ireland, as his will mentions estates in the county of Longford, at Cloughred in Tipperary, at Jamestown, Abbey of Derge, Macetown in the county Meath, &c. &c.

Sir James Ware married Mary, daughter of Ambrose Bryden, esq. of Saint Edmundsbury, Suffolk. (Walter Harris says she was the sister of Sir Ambrose Briden, of Maidstone, in Kent.) She was interred in the Church of St. Werberg, Dublin, Ireland, 5th December 1632.

After the death of his two daughters, Mary and Anne, he made a benevolence for a new Bible and Services book in 1621, to St. Werburghd's Church in Dublin, Ireland.

Sir James Ware died suddenly, 14th May 1632, in walking from Fishamble Street to his house on Castle Street, Dublin Ireland. He was interrred in the Church of St. Werberg, # 8 Castle Street, Dublin, Ireland. He was succeeded by his son, Sir James Ware, the Historian.

There are several members of his family buried in St Werbergs Church, # 8 Castle Street, Dublin, Ireland including his wife, son, and grandson.

• Born at Castle Street, Dublin, Ware was the eldest son of James Ware, who arrived in Ireland in 1588 as a secretary to the Lord Deputy of Ireland, FitzWilliam. His father was knighted by King James I, was elected M.P. for Mallow in 1613, and served as auditor-general for Ireland till his death in 1632, in which capacity he was succeeded by his son. .... etc.
• Ware's children include James (died 1689), Robert (died 1696) and Mary (died 1651). Mary married Sir Edward Crofton in 1647, he being a nephew of Thomas Crofton of Longford, Tireagh, Co. Sligo (another Thomas Crofton, of this family, killed Mac Fhirbhisigh in January 1671). A first cousin of Thomas Crofton of Longford was Catherine Crofton, daughter of John Crofton of Lisdorne, Co. Roscommon; Catherine was married to Reverend Joseph Ware, Dean of Elphin, who is believed to have been a younger brother of Sir James. James Ware junior had one daughter Mary (1651-1722) who married firstly Alexander Fraser and secondly Sir John St Leger, Baron of the Court of Exchequer (Ireland): she was described as a lady of great wealth and "questionable virtue".
• Ware died on Saturday 1 December 1666, aged seventy-two years and five days. He was buried in St Werburgh's Church, Dublin.

• Ware, Sir James, an eminent Irish antiquary, the writer on the antiquities, history, and biography of Ireland whose works have been most largely drawn upon by subsequent authors, was born in Castlestreet, Dublin, 26th November 1594. [His father, Sir James Ware, came to Ireland in 1588, in the train of Sir William Fitz William, Lord-Deputy. Amongst other appointments, he secured a patent for the lucrative post of Auditor-General of Ireland, which, with the interval of a few years during the Commonwealth, continued in his family for three generations. He was knighted by James I., and in the Parliament of 1613 sat as member for Mallow. "Having lived a very strict and truly religious life, he died suddenly (which was his constant wish for many years before) as he was walking home through Fishamble-street to his house in Castle-street, in 1632." • Sir Henry Piers 1st Baronet (1629–1691), of Tristernagh Abbey County Westmeath, Ireland was an Anglo-Irish landowner, soldier, Member of Parliament, Sheriff of Counties Longford and Westmeath, Sheriff of St Johnstown, and an antiquarian.

• PIERS, HENRY (d. 1623), author, was son of William Piers (d. 1603) [q. v.], constable of Carrickfergus. He paid a visit to Rome, became a Roman catholic, and wrote observations on Rome and various places on the continent. The manuscript remained in the possession of his descendants, and a copy belonging to Sir James Ware subsequently came to the Duke of Chandos's Library. An edition of this work is now in preparation by the author of the present notice. Piers died in 1623, having married Jane, daughter of Thomas Jones (1550?–1619) [q. v.], protestant archbishop of Dublin and chancellor of Ireland. • Sir William Piers was born in 1598, in the family seat of Tristernagh Abbey, the son of Henry Piers and Jane Jones. He succeeded his father to the estate upon his death in 1623. He was later knighted, and married Sir James Ware's daughter Martha. Among their children was Sir Henry Piers (1629-1691), who would become the first Piers Baronet, a title that is still passed down to their descendants.

He married 1589 or 1590 in Dublin, Ireland, Mary Briden, the daughter of Ambrose and Anne Briden (Bryden) of St. Edmundsbury, Suffolk, England. 2. Sir James Ware: born 26 Nov 1594 at Castle Street, Dublin, Ireland. He died 1 Dec 1666 in Dublin and was buried at St. Warboroughes Church, Castle St., Dublin, Ireland. At the age of 16 he entered Trinity College, in Dublin and studied there for six years. He married (first) Elizabeth Newman 31 Dec 1620 in Dublin, Ireland. She was the daughter of Jacob Newman. He spent the years 1626-29 in England and was influenced to study history by the Usher, Bishop of Meath. He was knighted in 1629 and inherited his father’s estates in 1632. He was very interested in the history of Ireland and wrote in Latin in 1633, History and Antiquities of Ireland. He was also the author of History of the Bishops of Ireland.” As a fervent Protestant he also wrote “Hunting of the Romish Fox, and the "Quenching of Sectarian Firebrands." During the Parlimentary period he was arrested, held in the town of London, deprived of his office and exiled to France. His office was restored under the Restoration of the monarchy and he led a private life in Ireland until his death.

3. John Ware: born about 1596 in Dublin, Dublin, Ireland. He died in 1640, murdered by Holliwood (Hollywood) of Artaine. He married, about 1620 in Dublin, Ireland, Elizabeth Piers (Pierce) the daughter of Henry Pierce Esq. of Tresternaugh, Counth Westmeath, Ireland. There was a Holliwood family of Artaine near Dublin, but details of the murder are elusive.

4. Mary Ware: born about 1595 or about 1604 in Dublin, Dublin, Ireland. She died 6 Jul 1620. She married, about 1615 in Dublin, Ireland, Christopher Conway Esq. of Rathmines.

5. Russell Ware: born about 1596 or about 1609 probably in Dublin, Dublin, Ireland. She married, before 1616 in Dublin, Ireland, Humphrey Reynolds, Esq. of Loughscurie, County Leitrim, Ireland

6. Cecilia Ware: born abt 1598 in Dublin, Dublin, Ireland, She died 20 Mar 1665/66 in Dublin, Ireland. She married Sir Dudley Loftus, Nov 1626 in Kilyan (Killian), Meath, Ireland.

7. Joseph Ware: born abt 1599 in Dublin, Dublin, Ireland. He died 26 Feb 1647/48. He married about 1622 in Dublin, Ireland, Katherine Crofton. He is also reported to have married Katherine (or Mary) Dunville, daughter of Gilbert Dunville, Gentleman of Dublin. Joseph Ware received a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Trinity College in Dublin. He was a clerk in Holy Orders.

8. Arthur Ware: born 1600 in Dublin, Dublin, Ireland. He died 26 Feb 1647/48. He received a Master of Arts Degree at Trinity College, in Dublin, Ireland. Some family trees give his birth as 1509, which is impossible. The similarity of the date of death to that of his brother Joseph create some suspicion that the reported data may be in error.

9. Martha Ware: born about 1604 in Dublin, Dublin, Ireland. She married about 1632, in Dublin, Ireland, William Piers.

[Note: Robert Gene Ware: born 1589 in Yorkshire, England has been listed as a son of Sir James Ware. He died 1665 in Gloucester, VA. He married Jane Wade She was born 1589 in England, daughter of William W. Wade and Anne Waller. It is unlikely that his father was actually James Wade, because he is not listed on James Ware’s funeral certificate nor on the certificate of his wife.]

   James Ware was reportedly born in Yorkshire, England, and attended the best schools in England.  No source gives the names of any of these schools.  His father is said to have had an influential position with the Queen Elizabeth I’s court, and thus able to gain a position for his son James.  At the age of 20 James Ware moved to Ireland and became Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Sir William Fitzwilliam.  Six years after his arrival in Ireland he became clerk of the Common Pleas in the Exchequer. He was, in 1588 appointed auditor-general for the Kingdom of Ireland.   

   On 6 Jun 1640, at the age of 42, James Ware was knighted by King James I.  He was given a family patent on the office of auditor general and his family held this post for almost a century.  His coat of arms is described as “Gold two lions passant azure a bordure also azure charged with nine escallops gold”.  No crest was allowed. 

   Sir James Ware became wealthy and purchased considerable land in and around Dublin.  

   On a list of members sent to the Irish Parliament by the constituencies of the County of Cork Ireland, May 1, 1613, was Sir James Ware, Knight, of Macestown, representing Mallow, incorporated 27 Feb 1612.  It was at Woodford, near Mallow, where his brother John Ware and his family settled. 

   In 1621, following the deaths of his daughters Mary and Anne, he made a benevolence for a new Bible and Services Book to St. Werburgh’s Church in Dublin.  He died suddenly while walking home through Fishamble Street to his mansion on Castle Street.  His will mentions estates in the county of Longford at Cloughred, in Tipperary, at Jamestown, at the Abby of Derge and at Macetown in County Meath.  

   The Irish funeral certificate of Sir James Ware, Knight indicates that he was auditor to His Majesty’s Revenue and that he died 14 May 1632 and was buried at St. Werburghs Church, Dublin.  This certificate also indicated that he married Mary, the daughter of Ambrose Brydon of Bury St. Edmunds, in the County of Suffolk, England, and by her had four sons and five daughters. 

   St. Werburghs Church is located near Dublin Castle in Dublin, Ireland.  It was built in the 12th century.  A fire severely damaged the church in 1754 that left only the tower and façade intact.  The original spire was removed in 1836 because British officials decided it would be a good location for snipers to shoot at soldiers or officials in nearby Dublin Castle.

James attended the best schools in England and through his father's position in the Court of Queen Elizabeth I, he obtained a positionas Secretary tp the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.

James Ware was the youngest of four sons of Christopher Ware, was very early sent to push his fortunes in the Court of Queen Elizabeth. In the year 1588 he acompanied Sir William Fitz-Willaim, lord deputy of Ireland, in the capacity of secretary. This was the first appearance of this family in the sister-kingdom. Owing to his great attention to the public affairs of Ireland, he was advanced, about six years after his arrival, to the office of clerk of the Common Pleas in the Exchequer, and shortly afterwards obtained the appointment of Auditor-General with a revisionary patent of the office in favour of his son. In the reign of James I,at the age of 42, he was knighted on 17 June 1610 and in 1613 wasreturned member of Parliament for the Borough of Mallow, in the County of Cork. He appears to have acquired considerable property while thus employed in Ireland, as his will mentions estates in the county of Longford, at Cloughred in Tipperary, at Jamestown, Abbey of Derge, Macetown in the county Meath, &c. &c.

Sir James Ware married Mary, daughter of Ambrose Bryden, esq. of Saint Edmundsbury, Suffolk. (Walter Harris says she was the sister of Sir Ambrose Briden, of Maidstone, in Kent.) She was interred in the Church of St. Werberg, Dublin, Ireland, 5th December 1632.
