About Sir John Pope Hennessy, KCMG MP

Sir John Pope Hennessey, KCMG (8 August 1834 – 7 October 1891), was an Irish and British politician and colonial administrator who served as the eighth Governor of Hong Kong and the fifteenth Governor of Mauritius.

MAURITIUS. [From our own Correspondent.] Port Louis, March 31 1887

Sir John Pope Hennessey with family left for England by the last homeward bound Messageries steamer Natal. Apart from any political or party feelings the demonstration which took place on his leaving the island was marked by unprecedented enthusiasm. No official honours were paid to him, because the legal adviser of the Crown informed the Executive Council that it would be unlawful to grant such a favour to a Governor functus de officio. But the Town Councilors managed to give an official reception to Sir John Pope Hennessey, and on the day of his departure he was invited to come to the Town Hall. Numerous visitors flocked there to shake hands with him, and members of all classes of the community, Mauritian planters, British officials, Chinese traders, and Indian merchants were represented. Lady Hennessey, who is universally loved in the island on account of her benevolence and sympathy for the poorer classes, came to the Town Hall, followed by upwards of 500 ladies. From all sides of the Town Hall, which was crowded to its utmost capacity, cheers were given for over ten minutes. Shortly afterwards addresses were presented to Sir J. Pope Hennessey, who responded in fitting terms, and distinctly stated that he firmly hoped to return to Mauritius. Cries of " Long live Sir John Pope Hennessey" rent the air, and then His Excellency and suite, followed by upwards of 5,000 persons, proceeded to the wharf, where another ovation was made to him.

The Mauritius delegate in London has had an interview with Sir Henry Holland, and has written to state that the Colonial Minister has promised to listen to the claims of the colonists after having heard Sir J. Pope Hennessey on his defense.

Smallpox, which is supposed to have been introduced from a steamer from India, has broken out in the island. Eight cases are reported, and a deputation, headed by the Mayor of Port Louis, has asked Government to approve the measures adopted by the sanitary authorities to the effect that all the patients and persons who have communicated with these latter should be sent to Flat Island in quarantine, but the Government has not yet approved the measure.

The steamer Yarra, which brings you this letter, has entered the harbour, but on hearing of the news the Commander refused to have any direct communication with the shore. I hear that nobody has been allowed to go on board.

Captain Parent, a Frenchman, but the master of the British brig Town of Liverpool, owned by Mauritians, has been arrested on a charge of being implicated in the slavery trade off Madagascar.

Mr. Fleming, onr new Colonial Secretary, has arrived in the island, and Mr. Bound, who was performing their duties, has left for England.
