About Christopher Smith

Biography

Updated 2 June 2024

Caution: as this biography and the Research Notes make clear, there are significant uncertainties about Christopher. There are a number of different Christopher Smiths of Burnley, Lancashire and nearby parishes.

Christopher SMITH, m. 3 May 1624, Burnley Parish, ENG, to Elizabeth HALSTEAD, b. bef. 1599, nee TOWNLEY, d/o Lawrence and Jennet (HALSTEAD) TOWNLEY, d. c 1675/5.

Elizabeth TOWNLEY m. 1st., 1 May 1616, Richard HALSTEAD of Windlehouse.

Christopher is not the same man as Lt. Christopher Smith of Massachusetts Colony, who married Martha Fairbanks.

His parents are not known. An unsourced tree gives them as Thomas Smith & Elizabeth Judd

Family

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Smyth-713

Elizabeth Towneley married (2nd) Christopher Smith, who, according to Dugdale's Visitation of Lancashire, was of Stannihurst.[5][6] She married (1st), at Coln, Lancashire, 1 May 1616, Richard Halstead of Windlehouse (in Burnley).[7] However, according to Burnley parish registers, a Christopher Smith married Elizabeth Halsted (Halsted/Halstead being the name of her first husband) on 3 May 1624 at St Peter, Burnley.[8] This Burnley record is likely to relate to the Christopher of this profile.

Probably, the following records are for the baptism of his children:

  1. John, son of Christopher Smith of Stonirakes, baptized 12 September 1624 at St Peter, Burnley[9]
  2. Lawrence, son of Christopher Smith of Stonirakes, baptized 29 March 1629 at St Peter, Burnley[10]
  3. Christopher, son of Christopher Smithe of Brearcleffe, baptized 29 January 1631/2 at St Peter Burnley[11][12]
  4. unnamed daughter of Christopher Smith, baptized 24 May 1635 at St Peter, Burnley[13][14]
  5. Thomas, son of Christopher Smyth of Stonirakes, baptized 17 December 1637 at St Peter, Burnley[15]

Possibly:
Hen, son of "Christopheri" Smyth of Edge, baptized 11 March 1637/8[16]
Definitely not:

George, son of Christopher Smithe of Brearcleffe, baptized 18 October 1601 at Burnley[17]

Conflicting death dates

  • Seen as died before Stonirakes, Burnley Parish, Lancashire, England and buried April 16, 1638 Milton Parish,, Lancashire, England.
  • Seen as died before 22 May 1665 at about age 72 in Burnley, Lancashire, England

Research Notes

Of Stoneyhurst, Mitton or Stanirakes, Burnley?

There is a degree of conflict between sources as to whether Christopher was of Stoneyhurst, in the parish of Mitton (Great Mitton), Lancashire or of Stanirakes in the parish of Burnley, Lancashire.

Dugdale's Visitation of Lancashire identifies Christopher, husband of Elizabeth Towneley, as being of "Stannihurst" (Stoneyhurst).[5] Parish records of Burnley, Lancashire suggest that this is likely to be a mistake, and that he was probably of Stonirakes, Lancashire. There is a discussion in a 1973 article in the The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography.[18]

Notes

Christopher SMITH was from Stonirakes, ENG. In the 1660 pole tax for Friercliffe, Christopher SMITH is listed along with wife Elizabeth, and sons Richard and Thomas.

Elizabeth (TOWNLEY) [HALSTEAD] SMITH was living at Windlehouse in 1623, when she christened a daughter on 1 May. She had three children:

  1. John Halstead
  2. Elizabeth Halstead
  3. Ellen Halstead

by her first husband, Richard HALSTEAD, probably her cousin. She had five sons by Christopher SMITH.

In her will written 28 Jan 1675/6, and probated 5 Jan 1670/80, she names all five sons,

  1. John Smith
  2. Lawrence Smith
  3. Christopher Smith
  4. Richard Smith
  5. Thomas Smith
  6. Elizabeth SCARBOROUGH of Summerhouse, County York, and
  7. Blanche SMITH (d/o John SMITH), bapt. 7 Mar 1651/2.

Correct Lineage with supporting Citations

Christopher Smyth/Smith is from the Smyth family of Elkington, Acthorpe, to Hackington, Last verifiable progenitor, John Smith, 1380. The main proof that Christopher Smith came from this line is his signature on a document recorded in "The Early Records of the Town of Providence" page 328 in which he drew the family crest. A Cross Moline with a Falcon volant, wings expanded. It is the family crest of the Smyths of Elkington, England. "An Alphabetical Dictionary of Coats of Arms Belonging to Families in Great Britain." Please review this information. I have traveled back to Rhode Island and worked with the Rhode Island Historical Society. Christopher Smith is NEVER listed in any of the archives as Sr. According to the First Settlers of Rhode Island, the History of the State of Rhode Island, and actual Rhode Island Court records: Records of the Court of Trails of the colony. It also contains Christopher Smith's signature with HIS HAND DRAWN FAMILY CREST. This crest is listed in The General Armory of England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. WE ARE NOT ROYALTY, but he comes from one of the many sons of the house of Elkington/ Smyth's of Hacthorpe, Smith Family, being a popular account of most branches of the name, however spelt, from fourteenth century downwards.(archive.org)
