Col. Lawrence Smith

b. 1629, d. a 08 Aug 1700

Col. Lawrence Smith was the son of Christopher Smith and Elizabeth Towneley.2 He was born in 1629 at Stonirakes, England; He was born at Stonirakes in 1629 according to footnote 151, page 361, The Towneleys and Warners of Virginia and their English Connection, by Mary Burton Derrickson McCurdy, The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Volume 81. He married Mary Debnam; Note: The following is from the article entitled Thomas Smith of Fairfax County, Virginia, The Virginia Genealogist, Volume 40, Number 1, (Jan-Mar, 1996), by Henry G. Taliaferro:

"Several sources, including Gary Boyd Roberts, The Royal Descent of 500 Immigrants to the American Colonies or the United States (Baltimore, 1983), give the name of Lawrence Smith's wife as Mary Hitchin. I am satisfied that she was Mary Debnam; see Mary Burton Derrickson McCurdy, "The Towneleys and Warners of Virginia and their English Connections," The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, v. 81, p. 361, note 151, and J. B. C. Nicklin, ibid., v. 56, pp. 208-210. Nicklin erred, however, in assuming that Mary Debnam and her sisters were the daughters of "Henry Deadman" of Rappahannock River, Virginia. They were the issue of William and Catherine Debnam of York and Gloucester counties. After the death of William Debnam in 1657, his widow married the Rev. Charles Grymes of Gloucester County (ibid., v.81, p. 360)." [end of Taliaferro article quote].1 He died after 8 August 1700.

He left a will on 8 August 1700; From pages 97 & 98 of "The Armistead Family 1635-1910," (1910) by Virginia Armistead Garber:

"The first Major Lawrence Smith (of Abington Parish, Gloucester), was a man of great influence and estate. He bore the coat-of-arms of the Smiths of Totness, co. of Devon, England. He married Mary (???), and his will was dated August 8, 1700, but no copy thereof has been preserved. In 1686 "Temple Farm," Yorktown, was sold to Major Lawrence Smith. He was surveyor for the Crown for the counties of York and Gloucester. In 1691 he laid out the town of Yorktown on the land of Benjamin Reade, and received fifty acres for the same."

"There is a question whether Lawrence Smith was married before he came to Virginia. In tracing the history of the Lawrence Smith born at Stonirakes in 1629, we came across a marriage in the Burnley registers of a Lawrence Smith to a Mary Hitchon on September 28, 1651. It is doubtful that this was the Lawrence Smith of Stonirakes. Both a Lawrence Smith of Botten and a Lawrence Smith of Burnley baptized a daughter Mary the following year, and either of those could have been the husband of Mary Hitchon." [end of article].

Col. Lawrence Smith, of Abingdon Parish, Gloucester County, was a man of great influence and wealth in his day. He bore the coat-of-arms of the Smiths of Tottne, County Devonshire, England, from which place he had perhaps emigrated to the Colony. His wife's name was Mary ....., and his will was dated Aug. 8, 1700, but no copy of it has been preserved. He was surveyor for the counties of Gloucester and York in 1686, and in 1691 laid out the town of Yorktown. In 1699 he was recommended by the Governor among the "gentlemen of estate and standing" suitable for appointment to the Council, but his death the following year prevented the bestowal of this honor upon him. He was conspicuous also as a leader in the early Colonial Wars. In 1676 he commanded "111 men out of Gloucester Co." at a fort near the falls of the Rappahannock River, and the same year he led the "trained bands" of Gloucester against the rebels under Bacon. The following were his children, as far as is known:

1. John, of Gloucester County; member of the Council and county lieutenant.

2. [Col] Lawrence, of York County; Colonel, Justice, Sheriff of the County, and member of the House of Burgesses. (see below)

4. Augustine, of St. Mary's Parish, Essex; one of the first bench of justices for Spotsylvania County in 1722.

5. Charles, of Essex County; died in 1710.

6. Elizabeth, m. Capt. John Battaile of St. Mary's Parish, Essex, and had issue: John, Lawrence, Hay, Nicholas, and others.

7. Sarah Smith, m. John Taliaferro, as above.
