He served in the wars of France in the tetinue of Sir William de Harrington, K.G. whose sister, Margaret, daughter of Robert de Harrington, Lord Harrington, he had married. Sir Richard was s. by his son,

Lord of Millum, who was sheriff of Cumberland in the 35th of HENRY VI. to which office he was appointed for life by the Duke of Gloucester. he represented the county in the 7th of EDWARD IV. and was keeper and bailiff of the king's woods and chases in Barnoldewicke, in the county of York, steward of Penrith, and warden of the West Marches. He m. JOANE, eldest daughter and co-heir of SIR MILES STAPLETON,|| and had three sons, viz.

This lady, on the death of her brother George, duke of Bedford, divided with her four sisters as his co-heirs, the large possessions which had belonged to the MARQUESS OF MONTACUTE, her father, to SIR EDMUND INGLESTHORPE, her maternal grandfather and to JOHN TIPTOFT, EARL OF WORCESTER, her maternal great-uncle, as fully set forth in the ancient partition made on the 4th of July, 17th of HENRY VII. in the hands of the present Mr. Huddleston.
