Biographical Summary

"William Sharp, of Scotscraig, co. Fife, only s. and h. of James Sharp, Archbishop of St. Andrews (1662-79), by Helen (m. 6 April 1653), da. of William Moncreiff, of Randerston,was b. probably about 1655 ; suc. his father (who was murdered at the age of 66), 3 May 1679, in the estates of Scotscraig and of Strathtyrum in the parish of St. Andrews, being served his heir general, 6 May 1680, and was cr. a Baronet [S.], 21 April 1683, with rem. to heirs male of the body. He sue. to the considerable estate of Stoniehill, co. Edinburgh, on the death of his uncle, Sir William Sharp, Deputy Keeper of the Signet, to whom he was served heir and of which he had a Crown charter 31 July 1706. He was M.P. [S.] for Clackmannanshire, 1681-82. He m. Margaret, da. of Sir Charles Erskine, 1st Baronet [S. 1666], of Cambo, Lyon King of Arms, by Penelope, da. of Arthur Barclay, of Colhill. He d. at Stoniehill, and was bur. 27 Jan. 1711/2, at Inveresk. Will dat. 5 May 1690, registered at Edinburgh 22 Aug. 1712. His widow d. March 1726, and was bur. at St. Andrews."
