HASTINGS GAZETTE 1 FEB 1962 MRS. JOHN SCHABERT DIES IN CALIFORNIA, IS BURIED AT NEW TRIER The remains of Mrs. John Schabert, nee Sophie Kneifel, 75, were brought to hastings by plane from San Leandro CA last Friday and a visitation was held at the Caturia Funeral home here until Monday at 9:30 am, when final services were held in St. Mary's church, New Trier, with Rev. Ralph Muehlstein officiating at the Requiem Mass. Burial was made in St. Mary's cemetery, beside the grave of Mrs. Schabert's husband. Serving as active pallbearers were grandsons and nephews, Richard Schabert, James Franke, Claude Donndelinger, Luverne and Thomas Kelly, and Peter Salzl. Fraternity sisters from St. Mary's Society of which Mrs. Schabert was a member, Mrs. Michael Lucius, Mrs. Nick Lorentz, Mrs. Julius Tix, Mrs. Nick Reinardy, Mrs. Josephine Beissel, and Mrs. Henry Peine, formed an honorary escort. Mrs. Schabert was one of a family of seven children born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kneifel of New Trier. She was born October 28, 1886, and grew to womanhood in the New Trier community. She was married to John Schabert in St. Mary's church, and subsequently before returning to the New Trier community had also resided several years at Colorado Springs, CO, and Perth, ND. Arriving in Minnesota again about 1921, the Schabert family settled on a farm in Douglas, where Mr. Schabert passed away August 6, 1948. Born to their union were 11 children, two sons Frank and Gregory preceding their mother in death. Surviving are Mrs. John (Marie) Osgood, Mrs. Madelyn Gilliland, Mrs. Gertrude Smith, and Arthur, all of San Leandro CA, Mrs. Leona Bauer of Northfield, Mark and Edward of Douglas, Mrs. William (Adolphine) Franke, South St. Paul, and Master Sergeant Nicholas of Fort Jackson, SC. Also surviving are 26 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Agatha Donndelinger and Mrs. Ted Salzl of Hastings.
