About Sr Alphonsine Welp
Sister Alphonse Welp, CSJ, died at Bethany Convent, St. Paul, Minnesota, on September 3, 1954, in the 91st year of her age and 75th of her religious life.
Born Teresa Welp in St. John, Indiana, in 1863, Sr. Alphonsine entered the St. Paul novitiate when she was seventeen and lived to become the oldest Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet in that province.
After her profession on August 26, 1882, Sister taught for twenty-two years in the grade and high schools of the community. In 1904, she came to the College of St. Catherine as one of the pioneer group of twenty-seven Sisters who opened Darham Hall, the first building on the campus. Here she taught as a memboer of the German and music faculties for thirty years before she retired in 1934. She continued to live at the College, however, until Bethany was opened, two months before her death.
