DESCENDANTS OF STEPHEN FLANDERS 1:

Four of Stephen Flanders’ descendants were governors of states or territories.

This is very unusual as any student of American history will know.

The distinguished four were:

(1) Hon. Alvan Flanders, governor of Washington;

(2) Hon. Benjamin Franklin Flanders, governor of Louisiana;

(3) Hon. Lewis Cass, governor of Michigan, and

(4) Hon. Walter Harriman, governor of New Hampshire.

Both partners became state governors as Pillsbury was governor of Minnesota. Harriman was colonel of the Warner troops in the Civil War and was promoted for gallant conduct from Colonel to Brigadier General. He had served as a prisoner in’ Libby Prison.

The other descendant who rose to the rank of General in the United States Army was Lewis Cass, who led an expedition into Canada during the War of 1812 and was captured there.

Info on the Flanders geneology: Origin of the Surname Flanders: Locality. A name given to a native of Flanders, a County or Earldom of the Low Countries, or Netherlands. STEVEN FLANDERS

appears to have arrived in this country between 1623-1648,

and is first found as a resident of Gorgeana, Maine, now known as York.

He then moved to Salisbury, Massachusetts, in 1649-50

and became active in town affairs there.

There is no record of his ever becoming a Freeman because church membership

was a requirement and Steven never joined a church.

However, on February 8, 1651, he did take the "Oath of Fidelitie."

His occupation was that of planter or farmer.

He was a man of education because he could read and sign his name,

and he seems to have parlayed this education into some wealth.

In 1650 his holdings were an acre and a half for a house lot, while in 1684 at the time of his death (June 27, 1684, in Salisbury) he owned 74 acres of land and his estate was valued at 300 pounds.

He married JANE "SANDUSKY" prior to 1646. It is not known what her last name was, but she was supposed to have been a Christianized Indian, possibly of the Sandusky tribe.

Jane Flanders died in Salisbury on November 19, 1683.

This is one story.... STEPHEN FLANDERS was born about 1595 in the Dutch Netherlands. He arrived in New England prior to 1646, and is first recorded as a resident of Gorgeana, now known as York, Maine. Stephen Flanders married Jane "Sandusky" prior to 1646. Stephen Flanders, his wife and two children moved to Salisbury, Massachusetts in 1649-50. There is no record of his ever becoming a “freeman” at Gorgeana or Salisbury. Church membership was a requirement for “freeman” status, and Steven Flanders never joined the local church. On February 8, 1651, he did take the "Oath of Fidelitie." Stephen Flanders’ occupation was recorded as that of a planter. He was also apparently a man of some education, because he could read and sign his name, and he seems to have parlayed this education into some wealth. NOTES for Steven, I: Steven Flanders arrived in this country ca 1638, he is believed to have arrived from the Flemish Netherlands by way of England, it is believed. He may have been a passenger on the HMS Confidence, from Southampton, England. According to an account given by William Bradford, Governor of the Massachusetts Colony, a ship arriving from England at the time Steven allegedly arrived, encountered a violent storm off the coast of New England and was nearly lost in a shipwreck, and had to put in at Portsmouth, N.H. in stead of Plymouth. The story matches the one given by Steven Flanders, I. It describes his voyage over in every detail. Having lost everything on his voyage over, including valuable documents which would have resulted in his attaining money and land, Steven Flanders, I, had to start from nothing in the New World but his name, when he was already middle aged for his times. He is known to arrived at Portsmouth in the 1630's. He was in York, Maine, with a wife named Jane prior to his arrival at Salisbury, MA in the 1640's. ...
