The actual record (see attached) shows that the family living at the farm are John and Jane Elliott, with their daughters Jane and Sarah. The others must all be workers.
Family legend says that Stephen and Edwin went out to the Cape on the ship the Vernon with Sir Harry Smith, landing on Dec 1st 1847, but so far no proof of this has been found. Certainly the dates seem to line up.

Lived at one stage at 4 Wrensch Rd., Observatory, Cape Town.
Note: a very short pregnancy - married in January, first child born August!
Stephen is buried in Newlands Forest Cemetery - apparently a very beautiful spot, but now wild and overgrown.

Edit: In regards to the legend about Stephen and Edwin having come to South Africa with Sir Harry Smith has merit, however research overseas by Brian Wells and other family members locally in South Africa have yet to find proof of this. The actual shipping records at the National Archives in Roeland Street for this period only list the Captain and VIP Passengers, also the date of the 1st of December 1847 does not fit in with the marriage of Edwin Hart to Johanna Philipina Hendrina Kroissa (Kruse) in June of 1847, some 6 months before Sir Harry Smith arrived in the Cape Colony, although it can fit in with Stephen Hart who married the widow Johanna Magdalena Brown (Barchfeld) on the 31st of January 1848, both marriages at St Pauls in Rondebosch being the first record of the two brothers from Newick in East Sussex actually being in the Cape Colony.
