About Susannah Fiske

Not the daughter of John Browne & Alice Browne

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Porter-21176

Susana Porter was the daughter of Roger Porter, likely born about 1620, as she was not of age in 1638. She sail aboard the ship Confidence in 1638 to New England with her father and three sisters[1]. Her father was noted as being from "Long Sutton in the county of South". Susannah married Nathan Fiske about 1642 and they had five children, all born in Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1654 her father died and her husband made a claim in his estate. The settlement also mentioned a table Clothe and Napkins that Nathan had in his possession[2].. Susannah died on 25 Apr 1662 and was buried at Old Burying Place, Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts [citation needed].

Children with Nathan Fiske:

  1. Nathan, b. Oct. 17, 1642; d. Oct., 1694.
  2. John, b. Aug. 25, 1647; living 1676; exec'r of his father's Will.
  3. David, b. Ap. 29, 1650; d. about 1694.
  4. Nathaniel, b. July 12, 1653. When young he lived 4 years with Anthony Peirce, probably as an apprentice.
  5. Sarah, birth not recorded, but mentioned in her father's Will; m., Sept. 3, 1673, Abraham Gale.

Research Note

This profile previously stated the following: "Susannah Browne was born to John & Alice (Unknown) Browne, and baptized on 4 Sep 1617, in Aldringham, (on the west-side of the North Sea) Suffolk, England.[3]." However there is nothing to connect this Susanna with the Susanna Brown in the baptism record, and infact there is strong evidence that Susanna's Maiden name was Porter and she was the daughter of Roger Porter.

Origins

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Porter-4631

Roger Porter, listed in the ship passenger manifest as "of Long Sutton in the county of South, Husbandman, [age] 55", immigrated to New England on the Ship Confidence, April of 1638 with his four daughters[1].[2]

Roger Porter's first wife, the mother of his children, has not yet been identified. Since she is not recorded on the passenger manifest, presumably she died in England before 1638.

Children

Children with as-yet unidentified first wife, all born in England and listed on the passenger manifest:

  1. Joane Porter. Married 1) Thomas Chillingworth 2) Thomas Doggett
  2. Susan Porter. Married Nathan Fiske.
  3. Mary Porter. Married John Dunham.
  4. Rose Porter. Married 1) John Waterbury 2) Joseph Garnsey.

He married second Grace (Ravens) Sherman Rogers. Grace (Ravens) was first the widow of John Sherman, and her second husband, Thomas Rogers, who died in Watertown and was buried there on 12 Nov 1638,[3] not long after the widowed Roger Porter arrived in Watertown. Their wedding record has not been found, but presumably it occurred a decent interval after the death of Thomas Rogers.

Death

Roger Porter died on 3 Feb 1654 in Watertown, aged about 71[6]. Roger Porter's probate was settled in 1654[7].

Estate Settlement

The claimants listed in his estate were his widow, Grace, and Daniel Smith (husband of his stepdaughter, Elizabeth Rogers) & John Waterbury (husband of his daughter Rose) & Nathan Fiske (husband of his daughter Susanna), Thomas Dogget (husband of his daughter Joan & John Dunham (husband of his daughter Mary), claiming for their wives and children.
