Sven Johan Ögrim, KVO2kl was born on April 20, 1853 in Lofta, Kalmar County, Sweden. His parents were Sven August (Svanström) Ögrim and Stina Sofia (Tillberg) Svanström. He was a Smedlärling och skogsarbetare 1866-1873, Lärarutbildning 1873-1875, Folkskollärare 1878-1889.

Sven married Augusta Wilhelmina Larsson (Tillberg) Ögrim in 1877. Together they had the following children: Flavia Augusta Ögrim; Ester Naemi Ögrim.

Sven married Hulda Bernhardina Karolina (Lindwall) Ögrim in 1881 in Sweden. Together they had the following children: Johan Bernhard "Bern" (Ögrim) Treherne; Ruth Bernhardina Ögrim; Tobias Immanuel Øgrim; Ossian Mattias Ögrim; Eva Lovisa (Ögrim) Hildebrand; Hulda Sofia Ögrim; Harald Jack Ögrim; Seth August Ögrim; Paul Frithiof Ögrim; Herta Ögrim.

Sven married Maren Kirstine (Jörgensen) Ögrim on November 15, 1898. Together they had the following children: Julie Augusta Ögrim; Sofia Dorothea Ögrim; Sven William Wäinö Ögrim.

He died on March 12, 1938 in Matteus parish, Stockholm, Stockholm County, Sweden and was buried in Norra begravningsplatsen, kvarter 11E, gravnummer 41, Stockholm, Stockholm County, Sweden, Stockholm, Stockholm, Stockholm County, Sweden.



Sven Johan Ögrim (1853-1938) was a Commander of the Salvation Army, and a hymn-writer. He trained at the teacher's college (folkskoleseminariet) in Linköping, then worked as an elementary school teacher in Järla, Nacka. He joined the Salvation Army in 1883, and served as a soldier in Stockholm's Third Corps. He was Head of the Officer School (1888-1889), Field Secretary (1892), Chief Secretary in Norway (1895-1896), Head of the Salvation Army in Denmark (1896-1898), Head in Northern England (1898-1903), Commander in Finland (1903-1906), Commander in Norway (1906-1912), Head in Sweden (1912-1919), and Head in Germany (1919-1925). He wrote nine hymns, four of which are still included in the Salvation Army Songbook.

He was awarded the Red Cross Medal of Merit in 1925 and received the personal thanks of German president Hindenburg for his relief work in Germany following World War I. He was also a Commander of the Vasa Order, Second Class (Swedish) in October 1932.

He and his wife Kristine toured the western United States from December 1926 through February 1927. He and his wife Maren, of Stockholm, appear on the passenger list of the S.S. Stockholm, which left Göteborg on 17 September 1926. Ship's passenger lists show he and his wife arrived in New York from Göteborg on 28 September 1926. He spoke in Spokane (31 December 1926), Tacoma (4 January 1927), Everett (5 January), Bellingham (6 January), and Seattle, Washington (7 January); Portland, Oregon (11 January); San Francisco (15 January), Oakland (16 January), San Francisco (18 January), Lytton (20 January), San Franscisco (21 January), Turlock (22 January), Kingsburg (23 January), Los Angeles (25 January), San Diego (26 January), and Los Angeles (27 January), California; Salt Lake City, Utah (30 January); and Denver, Colorado (1 February). During this brief visit, he was expected to visit his foster sister, Mrs. Josephine Swanstrom, of Rock Springs, Wyoming. Presumably he did so, as her children were impressed with him, and one of them, Ellen, joined the Salvation Army in Denver.

A play about his life, Kommendör Øgrim, by Per-Olof Ilhammar, was performed in Överum in the summer of 2009.

In addition to the children listed here, Wikipedia says, "A daughter, Major Mrs. Lydia Sundström, also served mostly in Sweden, but also had assignments in Norway." Her family and the Ögrim family were close friends and Johan recommended her to the Salvation army school in London when she would become an officer.

Youth History of Johan

When Johan was three years old his parents became true believers in God and they joined the Reader Movement ("läsarrörelsen"). It was a great change for the family. Johan's father was known as a hard person and he liked to drink . He was a very tall and strong man and not afraid of take a fight when he wasn't sober. God changed the family's life and Johan grew up with the Bible as his guardline. When Johan was 12 years old he was a Sunday school teacher. He was so well speaking and charismatic that even grownups stayed and listen to the drifted child. The rumor about him spread and he been asked for to preach more and more. The owner of Överums bruk count Adolf Stackelberg of Stensnäs was so impressed of the boy from a poor soldier's family that he helped him with his studies to become a teacher.

When Johan finished his studies he got married to his best friend Augusta Wilhelmina. They got 2 girls, Flavia and Noomi. But a tragedy happened. Both mother and children died in TBC two years after the marriage. Johan went to work in Maria parish in Stockholm. After 4 years he met his second wife Dina. She was daughter to a wholesale dealer. Johan was as a teacher invited to the local society and Dina was playing piano to entertain the guests. She was a believer and they found one other.

In his second marriage with Hulda Karolina Bernhardina "Dina" Lindvall (born in January 31 1862, died 1897) he got several children, amongst them their son Tobias Immanuel Ögrim (born in 1886), which later also became Commander (Kommendör) and national leader for the Salvation Army in Sweden, Norway amongst other countries.

Other children with Dina: Bernhard (born in 1883), Ruth (1885), Eva (1890), Seth (1894), Frithiof (1896).

His third wife (married in November 15 1898) was named Kirstine, born Jörgensen (6 september 1868).

Children with Kirstine: Julie (born 1899), Dorothea (1901), Wäinö (1905).

I Sverige er han også kjent for å ha skrevet sanger som fortsatt står i Frelsesarmeens sangbok.
