Article on the Bryans of Aylesbury, England

We refer again to The American Genealogist, vol. X, p. 90, the article on the Bryans of Aylesbury, England, by Howard j. Banker, Ph.D. we quote:

There would seem to have been more than one Thomas Bryan whose children were baptized during this period and during this period and unfortunately the names of the mother is not given at any time in the baptismal records, hence the Tomases cannot be distinguished except by a careful collocation of the dates. Later the writher (Dr. Banker) obtained a copy of the will of Thomas Bryan of Aylesbury who was undoubtedly the father of Alexander Bryan of Milford as he mentions his son Alexander and there is no alexander son of Thomas mentioned in the Aylesbury registers. This document materially aids us in the interpretation of the church records At this point Dr. Bunker gives an abstract of the will, which compares with that published by the late Evelyn B. Baldwin in The American genealogist, vol. IX, p. 89. We have combined both abstracts in the following: The will of Thomas Bryan of “Aylesburie,” Bucks., was dated October, 1611 and proved 5 November 1611 by widow “Frances the relict sole executrix.” The testator describes himself as “Thomas Bryan of Ailesburie in the county of Bucks, draper.” He makes bequest to the poor of Aylesbury: 20s. to his daughter Judith Springall, he gives “that feather bed and bluster which was her mother’s,” implying that she was a daughter by a former marriage. He then mentions two sons Austen and Alexander, neither of them yet twenty-one and apparently not married, who were to receive £30 each at 21 years. Daughters Elizabeth, Rebecca, Faith, Amye Frances, Mary and Ann, not eighteen and single, to receive £10 each as they come to eighteen years of age. To my son Thomas Bryan, 10s; son Robert Bryan £10; son William £10; “Mary Hensawe my kinswoman,” who received £10; lands in Walton field and Griffin Orchard unto Frances my wife whom he appoints “sole executrix” and makes “my brothers to be overseers of this my last will and testament.” These, from the abstracts reported by E.B. Baldwin, were Thomas Bowlinge and Henry Bowlinge. The witnesses were Robert Bell, William Clark, John Cockman and Robert Gullock (qu. ?Bullock). (Prerogative Court of Canterbury, 100 Wood). It seems evident from this document that Thomas Bryan married twice and had at least thirteen children, and very certainly more. We ontune the abstracts given aby E.B. Baldwin; Thomas Bryan (Prerogative Court of Canterbury, 21 Fenner). Sentence pronounced 5 February 1611/2 in a suit concerning the Will of Thomas Bryan, senior, of Ayesbury, Co. Bucks., draper, between Frances Bryan the relict and adminstratrix of the last Will of the deceased, declaring for the sanity of the said deceased and the validity of the said Will. Dr. Banker then lists in his article the baptisms of all the children of Thomas Bryan, or of a Thomas Bryan, and the burial entries for some of them. He comments on this large family by saying: This is a formidable list of children but all the names (except Nathaniel, the Anne baptized in 1586, John baptized in 1595, John baptized in 1609 and Alice also baptized in 1609) are mentioned in the will of Thomas and it is seen that rejecting the others as a different family does not render the problem casier of solution. The fact that at the baptism of Anne 21, January 1607…the father is called Thomas Bryan, presumably the son baptized 20, June 1581, and now old enough to be the father of a family. Only the last two in the above list could be regarded as possibly children of the son unless we assume a duplication of name in the two families, and we find no records confirming a family of the younger Thomas nor are there any children of a Thomas Brayn recorded in the baptismal records after the death of Thomas in 1611 until 1646, whereas before that date there are frequent. The mention of Judith in the will Thomas, as we have notice, implies that she was the daughter of a deceased wife. Thomas, Robert and William are mentioned as they there we over twenty-one at the date of the will in 1611. Austen and Alexander are distinctly said to be not of age. The daughters named, other and Judith, are all stated to be less than eighteen and with the exception of Elizabeth, are evidently named in the order of birth. Faith does not appear in the parish registers. However, the only gap in the baptisms in which she could be reasonably placed occurs between Rebecca and Amy and puts in the order as gin in the will. Incredible as it seems we feel constrained to leave the list as it is until more conclusive evidence is available. Too great stress should to be laid on apparent inconsistencies or even discrepancies since ancient records are not only subject to intrinsic errors as well as incorrect interpretation, but the social conventions of the period are sometimes unusual. For some reason Dr. Banker does not see fit to suggest that in the long list of children, there may have been several sets of twins, despite the lack of identical baptismal dates for them. This is easier for us to believe than the rather oblique suggestion the “social conventions of the period are sometimes unusual” …which we infer to mean that some of the children were illegitimate. Continuing: From his will we know that Thomas Bryan was, a dealer in cotton and woolen goods and that he belonged to the merchant class. He evidently had some means although it is difficult to decide wither, he could be accounted a man of wealth… An abstract of the will of Robert Bryan, son of Thomas and Frances (Bowling) Bryan was made for Evelyn B. Baldwin and is as follows: Robert Bryan of Aylesbury, bucks., draper. Will dated 18 may 1626, proved 16 November, 1626, by the sole executrix named. “Whereas I stand seized to me and my heirs forever of and in all that message, situate in Ailesbury, near the market place, now in the tenure of me and my brother Alexander Bryan and also of and in that Gandlehouse with the appurtenances situates in Ailesbury in a lane there called Silver lane and also in the tenure of me and my brother, bequeathed the same to my son Thomas Bryan and to his heir, and for want of such issue, then unto my four daughters Dorothy, Amy, Mary and Francis, their heirs and assigns forever. Provided always that Dorothy my wife shall have the custody of my said son during his minority and shall enjoy the rents and profits towards the bringing up of my said son and daughters, until my said son shall have accomplished the age of 23 years. Whereas I also stand seized of and in the message, situate in Ailebury, now in the occupation of William Cave, also of and in 9 acres of arreble land, lying in the common fields of Walton in the parish of Ailebury, I bequeath the same to my four daughters Dorothy Bryan, Amy Bryan, Mary Bryan and Francis Bryan and their heirs forever, provide nevertheless and said Dorothy my now wife, have the profits of this same until Francis , my youngest daughter, shall accomplish her age of 15 years.” Residuary legatee and sole executrix, the wife Dorothy. Overseers, friends Mr. Nathaniel Weston, Edward Cockman and John Rye. Witness: Lewis Rye, John Keabell, Mary Stevens and Dorothie Brideges. (Prerogative Court of Canterbury, 126 Hele).
