Little Sarah Ruddle, only twelve, niece of Isaac Ruddle, had come to visit her brother James. While there, she was often seen with a boy her age, Thomas Davis, whose family came in near the same time as the Goodnights, Conways and Longs. (Note: time frame appears to be abt. 1780).

She married THOMAS DAVIS February 21, 1791 in Shenandoah County, Virginia.He was born December 15, 1767 in Virginia, and died April 21, 1837 in Pike County, Missouri.

  • According to "The Davis Family of Kentucky" Sarah Ruddell and Thomas Davis were captured at Ruddell's Station, Virginia (now located in Harrison County, Kentucky) by the British and Indians in 1780. They were later released back to their families. The marker for the station is at the intersection of US 27 and SR 982., and the station was located 2 miles directly northeast of the marker on the eastern bank of the South Fork Licking River, now on private property. By 1802 Thomas and Sarah had moved to Kentucky and by 1828 Pike County, Missouri.

The families of Thomas Davis, of Montgomery County and Lt. John Davis, of Ruddle's Station both lived at Ruddle’s Station, Kentucky, in 1780, but so far, a connection has not been found between the families.


John Hinkston's or Isaac Ruddell's Station

The site was enlarged and fortified by Isaac Ruddell in April, 1779 and became known as Ruddell's Station. A great many people lived here and at Martin's Station in 1780 when both sites were captured by the British and Indians under Captain Byrd. Drake (1942:2115-216) lists the following settlers who were among the residents at the time of the attack:

  • DAVIS, SAMUEL. (1765--). Brother of John Davis. He was born in Pennsylvania.He came to Ruddell's Station from Rockingham County, Virginia in 1779. Heenlisted in Captain Ruddell's company. A Samule Davis was listed as a prisoneramong the Indians in 1783. After his captivity he lived in Mercer County,Kentucky. He received a pension in 1834 which stated "in 1779 soldiers fathermoved from Rockingham Cty VA to Riddle's Station in what is now Bourbon Cty KY(then in VA) & soldier lived there & enlisted there under his brother LtJohn Davis & was taken prisoner by the Shawnee Indians & after hisrelease he returned to KY & settled at Danville in Mercer Cty KY & livedthere until the death of his wife about 1829 & had been living amongst hischildren of which some were in Mercer Cty KY some in Todd Cty KY & some inHenry Cty KY where he had been since Aug 1833, soldier was born 1765 in PA."
