Possible alternate birth year for Thomas Hatfield, I is 1602.

Thomas Hatfield, I was the first identifiable ancestor of the American branch of Hatfields.

Thomas was a religious dissenter who escaped religious persecution from the Crown, by fleeing to Leyden, Holland, with Dr. John Robertson and his congregation. He went from Yorkshire, England to Leyden, Holland about 1610 and was of the congregation of John Robinson's Church at the time of his marriage. He and his sons appear to have come to America about 1660. Thomas Hatfield I and Matthias Hatfield were weavers at New Haven and Elizabeth. Robinson had been an Anglican minister, but came to believe like the Puritans, that the church was becoming too much like the Roman Catholic Church. Because of the persecution of the Puritans and Separatists by King James I (1556-1625). Robinson and Thomas Hatfield ancestor left for Holland, arriving first in Amsterdam, and then moving to Leyden. Soon after the congregation settled in Leyden John Robinson was publicly ordained as their new minister. William Brewster became their ruling elder. People from all over England made their way to Leyden and in time, the congregation came to number several hundred.

Thomas' occupation was a woolcomber as a young man. He first appeared in New York in 1665. Thomas Hatfield, I and son Matthias were weavers at New Haven and Elizabeth, NJ.

Records of Thomas' marriage to Anna Hentem Cox (c. 3/14/1612 possibly in Englefield, Berkshire, England - date ?, Amsterdam, Hunterdon Co., NJ) give his surname as "Hadvelt"; other spelling seen: "Hetfelod" and "Hadfield". An alternate date of birth for Thomas is 09/23/1589, and it is possible that Anna was born about 1600. It is unclear if Anna was born in England or Holland. If she was born in England, and she and Thomas met in England, then they may have fled to Holland together. However, other accounts show Anna being born in Holland, and she and Thomas also being married in Holland. This would suggest that only Thomas fled England for Holland, and once there, met his future bride.

Children of Thomas, I and Anna Hentem (Cox) Hatfield: William (1621 - ); Joseph (1623 - ); Thomas, II/Jr.(1626 - 1696); and Mathias M Hatfield (1635 - 1687).

Anna Hentem (Cox) Hatfield is was buried in the Holland Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Holland, Hunterdon Co., NJ.
