Born in Holland, of Scots Irish descent, supposed son of Thomas Hatfield of Leyden, native of Yorkshire, England. Matthias was a member of the New Haven Colony and first appeared as a member of the New Haven Colony on May 1,1660 where he took the Oath of Fidelity and subsequently in Elizabethtown, NJ on February 19, 1665 he took the same oath.

Matthias Hatfield and his widow bride were married in a double wedding with her sister Susanna (who married Jan Winans). He worked as a weaver and along with brothers-in-laws Jacob Melyn and Jan Winans, was one of the original "Associates" who founded and settled Elizabethtown, New Jersey about 1664 - 1665.

On December 5, 1673 Matthias Hatfield bought this stone house on Pearl Street at the corner of Hatfield, from Lubberson; the most pretentious house in Elizabethtown, N. Located at the foot of Pearl Street and the Elizabeth River, this Hatfield house played an important part in the Colonial Wars, for under the trees in front of the house were held "The Indian Councils and Treaties of Peace". It remained in the family for 241 years, until 1914.

Near the Elizabeth River he had tanneries and gave land for the Presbyterian Church and burial ground (which is now the center of town. Alexander Hamilton used to walk there learning his lessons while attending school at Barbers.) Matthias was one of the leading men in town, was a wealthy man, and greatly respected. Matthias Hatfield sat in the Justices Court as a chosen Freeholder. He was also a Justice, a High Sheriff, and a Collector for the County. He also sat in the Justices Court as a chosen freeholder.

Matthias Hatfield's Will, dated April 19, 1684 was Proved December 13, 1687; it is in the N.J. Archives XXI, pg. 114. Wife and Children are spoken of, but not by name. Witnesses George Ross, Humphrey Spinning. Originally buried in the Old Burying Grounds (Newark, Essex Co., NJ), Matthais was reinterred at Fairmount Cemetery (Newark, Essex Co., NJ) in a mass crypt in the 1890's, when the Old Burying Grounds became defunct.
