About Thomas Jefferson Dickey

Thomas Jefferson Dickey was born in Franklin County, Tennessee in 1839. He was reportedly named after President Thomas Jefferson, who his parents admired greatly. By 1850, his parents had moved the family to Jackson County, Alabama. Thomas showed up on the 1850 census at age 11.

Around 1857, Thomas married Mary Elizabeth Harrold of Hillsborough, Illinois. By the 1860 census, Thomas & Mary are in Dade County, Missouri. Missouri was a tough place to live during the Civil War and Dade County was no exception. Neighbors and even families were divided in their loyalties. There is no record as to Thomas's inclinations: Southern or Northern. However, some of his descendants years ago said he held Southern sympathies, being from Tennessee. After the war, Thomas moved to Black Bottom, Kansas for a while before returning to Missouri.

In 1882, Thomas decided to pack up and move to Williamson County, Texas where his elder children were already residing. They were beginning to have some financial success and Thomas wanted to see if the state could offer him better prospects for providing for his family. In 1884, Thomas's youngest son James Albert Dickey, then 2 years old, contracted the measles. James became so ill that his parents feared for his life. Thomas killed two horses riding wildly across the countryside looking for a doctor, which he finally located. His trip home was miserable, cold and rainy. The doctor saved young James, but Thomas developed pneumonia and died on April 16th.
