About Thomas Lincoln, II

Thomas "the miller" Lincoln's Ch., all by his first w., were -

  • 2. Thomas (Thomas1), prob. b. in Eng., was bt. by Rev. Peter Hobart of Hing. Feb. 1637-38, and became an early resident of Taunton. "Oct. 11, 1662. Thomas Linkon of Taunton in New England, 'husbandman,' in consideration of 40s. sells 'to Daniel Cushing of Hingham, all my great lot, containing 16 acres, lately given to me by Thomas Linklon, my father, lying in the township of Hingham, on the Great Plaine, and was given by the inhabitants of Hingham unto the said Thomas Linkon, my father,'" etc. (S.D., vol. iv. p. 65)

This is the first time I have seen Thomas, son of the miller, described as a 'husbandman'. It's not really accurate, since he ran a mill, and causes confusion, as he may be mistaken for the immigrant to Hingham, MA who was known as the husbandman.

His w. was Mary, dau. of Jonah Austin.

notes

THOMAS LINCOLN was born in England, and came to New England with his parents in 1635. He was baptized by Rev. Peter Hobart, of Hingham, in February, 1637/38, and became an early resident of Taunton, Bristol, MA, after that. According to "The History of Hingham, Massachusetts, 1893", on Oct. 11, 1662, THOMAS LINKON of Taunton in New England, "husbandman", in consideration of 40s. sells "to Daniel Cushing of Hingham, all my great lot, containing 16 acres, lately given to me by THOMAS LINKON, my father, lying in the township of Hingham, on the Great Plaine, and was given by the inhabitants of Hingham unto the said THOMAS LINKON, my father.

This is the first time I have seen Thomas, son of the miller, described as a 'husbandman'. It's not really accurate, since he ran a mill, and causes confusion, as he may be mistaken for the immigrant to Hingham, MA who was known as the husbandman.

Biography

Thomas Lincoln, Jr. (distinguished in the records by the title of grand senior), was born, probably in England before 1630,[1] and was baptized in Hingham in Feb. 1637-8, by Rev. Peter Hobart.[2]

This was on the river near what was later known as 'Fisher's Bridge,' and there are some persons living at the present time who remember the ruins of the old house, and very many who remember the cellar walls. Two very large buttonwood trees which stood near the house were cut down within twenty years." [as of 1917).[3]

  10. Experience "Thomas Lincoln, born in England, 1628. Came to Hingham, Massachusetts, with his father in 1636. He settled in Taunton in 1649, died there in 1695, and was granted a home lot. In 1675, at the breaking out of King Philips war, he was one of ninety head of families. In 1676-88, being then senior, he gave five acres of land toward Taunton's first minister, Samuel Danforth. In 1689 when money was raised for the expedition under Colonel Benjamin Church he contributed ten shillings, and during King William's war when money was raised for the expedition to Canada in 1690, he gave two pounds. In 1695 when the Chartley Iron Works were organized and one hundred acres of land was given to it from the North Purchase he was one of those who signed the deed. Member of the Military Company of Taunton in 1682. A large land owner, for in addition to his own rights under the original purchases he also inherited from his father considerable land. In 1658 declared a freeman; in 1677 elected surveyor to set off the common lands. In 1669, 1672, 1677, he with others purchased from King Philip all the land included in the ancient town of Taunton, from which several towns were later carved (except a purchase called the Titicut Purchase). He married in 1651, Mary Austin, daughter of Jonah Austin Sr. In 1694, instead of making a will he divided his property among his children, only reserving the right tosell a portion for this support."<ref>Genealogical and personal history of the Allegheny Valley, Pennsylvania; by Jordan, John W., 1913, page 234.</ref> "Thomas Lincoln died about 1694, for early in that year he distributedhis property to his surviving children.
