Thomas John Maddox, oldest son of Benjamin Maddox(I) and Frances Wheeler Maddox was born and raised in Charles County, Maryland. He married Frances Posey there in 1759. Thomas John and Frances had at least five children before his death sometime after 1770. Storm clouds of the Revolutionary War were gathering and their sons enlisted in the American army under the command of Gen. George Washington. Thomas John may have known or heard of this neighbor whose plantation, Mount Vernon, was across the Potomac River from them in the Colony of Virginia. At least two sons joined the westward migration as lands opened up in the Northwest Territory after the war. They traveled by covered wagon, part of the way by boat on the Ohio River, and settled in Kentucky and Ohio. As the fledging country developed, the spelling of pioneers' surnames often changed. This was true with some of the descendants of Thomas John. The spelling 'Maddox' changed to 'Mattox' with grandsons who crossed the Ohio River into Ohio and the given names, Thomas" and "John", were carried to Alabama and Texas by descendants.
