Benjamin Maddocks was the fourth child of Cornelius Maddocks and his spouse, Mary Smallwood Maddocks. His father had arrived in the British colony of Maryland as a young man, his ship docking at Port Tobacco, Charles Colony, on the Potomac River where he became a merchant and land holder. When Benjamin was about seven years old, his father died. His mother remarried and Benjamin and siblings were raised by their stepfather, John Taylor. Benjamin married Frances Wheeler in Charles County, Maryland and they were the parents of twelve known children. They lived to see children reach adulthood and were aware of the unrest among the colonists with the mother country, England. Both Benjamin and his spouse, Frances, died in 1770. Several of their children were among the citizens of the new nation after the Revolution War. Among these descendants, the spelling of the surname Maddocks changed to Maddox.
